Louisiana heads north for SBC matches against Texas State, Arkansas State
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team forced two tiebreakers in doubles play but eventually dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 43-ranked Tulane on Tuesday at Cajun Courts.
The loss to Tulane (18-5) snapped a four-game winning streak for Louisiana, which fell to 5-7 on the season with Sun Belt Conference matches coming up against Texas State and Arkansas State beginning Saturday in Jonesboro, Ark..
The Green Wave claimed the doubles point, but not without a long fight from the Cajuns. Tulane's duo of Kyla Klier and Christina Sisti downed Louisiana's tandem of Carla Ortega and India Shiaelis 6-3 to start off doubles play.
From then on, it wasn't easy for Tulane in doubles. The team of Abby Johnson and Alexandra Way fell behind 4-2 at No. 2, but they rallied back to force a tiebreak. Lucile Delabarre and Kelly Drew also went to a tiebreak on Court 1. But the Green Wave duo of Sofia Kurtz and Elena Muller edged out Johnson and Way for the 7-6 win to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, the Cajuns fought hard but dropped matches at No. 2, 3, and 6. Way and Johnson both won their first set in singles, but their matches were unfinished.
Drew was making a comeback effort after dropping the first set at No. 2, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. But Sade Atkinson rallied back to win the match 6-4, 6-4 and clinch the victory for Tulane.
Louisiana returns to Cajun Courts on Friday, March 31, when it faces Incarnate Word. The match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., and admission is free.
