Louisiana returns to action March 9 against Southern
LAFAYETTE – Kelly Drew and Carla Ortega teamed up at No. 2 doubles to post a convincing 6-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Judit Vives and Maria Maldonado, but the Islanders would clinch the doubles point and claim three singles matches for a 4-0 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team on Friday at Cajun Courts.
Alexandra Belle, Maldonado and Hortense Boscher each picked up wins in singles play for A&M-Corpus Christi (5-1), playing its first match after having its 25-match regular-season win streak snapped last week by SMU. Louisiana, which has missed key contributors Elena Sava and Marina Garcia Rodriguez to injury, fell to 1-6 on the season.
After the Islanders took the first doubles match at No. 3, Drew and Ortega evened the best-of-three competition in their first match as a tandem. The Islanders would eventually clinch the doubles point at No. 1 as Boscher and Jelena Dzinic earned a 6-4 victory over Louisiana's Alexandra Way and Lucile Delabarre.
Belle picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ortega at No. 6 with Maldonado earning a 6-3, 6-0 win over freshman Yasmine Ansari at No. 5. The Islanders would eventually clinch the match at No. 1 as Boscher claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Way.
Louisiana will continue its seven-match homestand on March 9 when it plays host to Southern at Cajun Courts. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
