Cajuns Open Homestand With 4-1 Win Over Southern

LAFAYETTE — The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team took care of business against Southern, scoring a 4-1 victory to record the team's first home win this season on Thursday at Cajun Courts.
Louisiana (2-6) picked up a win for the first time since a season-opening 4-1 win at Jackson State on Jan. 22. Southern fell to 3-7 on the season with the loss.
The Cajuns started the match on a high note, with the duo of Kelly Drew and Carla Ortega tallying the first doubles win of the day with a 6-1 victory on Court 2.
Alexandra Way led the way for the Cajuns, earning a 6-2, 6-3 singles win over Stephanie Mbaya at No. 1 to get singles play off to a good start, and scoring a 6-2 victory with teammate Yasmine Ansari at No. 3 to claim the doubles point.
Ortega was the next Cajun to continue the day's success, picking up a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Southern's Nicki Neal on Court 5. Then Abby Johnson clinched the match for Louisiana with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Tanaka Chakanyuka at No. 4.
Louisiana continues its busy home stretch on Friday against Alcorn State. The match is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. and admission is free.
