SETTING THE SCENE
Winners of five straight, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team concludes a three-match homestand and plays its final non-conference match of the season when Southeastern Louisiana visits Earl K. Long Gym on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
First serve against the Lions is set for 6:30 p.m. Links for live stats and free live video is available on the volleyball schedule page at RaginCajuns.com.
Louisiana (10-7) is coming off a weekend sweep of Sun Belt West division rivals Arkansas State and Little Rock which extended the current win streak that began back on Sept. 16 vs. Eastern Michigan in the finale of the Chicago State Invitational.
The Ragin' Cajuns seek to even up their non-conference record (presently a 6-7 mark) which would mark a .500 or better non-conference mark for the first time since 2014.
Louisiana and SLU (2-15) meet for the third straight season. The Cajuns rallied for a five-set win in Hammond in 2015, then swept the Lions at E.K. Long Gym last season behind a season-high .378 hitting percentage.
The Ragin' Cajuns offense is charged by the outside hitter tandem of Stacey Reilly (184 kills/2.88 per set) and Hali Wisnoskie (169 kills/2.82 per set) and middle blocker duo of Nia Antoine (147 kills/2.53 per set) and Dree'Ana Abram (114 kills/1.87 per set).
Abram's 60 blocks and Antoine's 50 blocks have led the front line defense, while libero Sydney Davis averages 4.59 digs per set alongside freshmen Lexi Hebert (2.59 digs per set) and Avery Breaux (2.27 digs per set) in shoring up the back row. Those efforts have helped lead Louisiana to a Top 5 ranking in digs (conference leader) and blocks.
Senior setter Jessica Bartczyszyn has delivered 10-plus assists per set each of the past two weeks in guiding the Louisiana offense to a .200-plus hitting percentage each time out. Her season-long efforts have guided the team to a .217 percentage which ranks third in the Sun Belt.
Since last suffering defeat back on Sept. 15 vs. Wright State in the Chicago State Invitational, the Ragin' Cajuns offense heated up to 13.85 kills per set on a .240 attack percentage during the five-match win streak.
Against the Lions, the Ragin' Cajuns aim to keep another five-match win streak intact. Louisiana has won its past five matches in the confines of E.K. Long Gym, a streak which began in the Sawyer Camillo Memoria Classic.
NOTEWORTY
RED-HOT START: Louisiana's 4-0 start in Sun Belt Conference play is the program's best-ever as a member of the league (1991-present). It equals the all-time program record set by the 1986 team in the Southland Conference.
RED-HOT START (Part 2): Individually, the Ragin' Cajuns middle blockers have been swinging a hot arm at the onset of Sun Belt play. Dree'Ana Abram has hit above .300 in all four league matches thus far. Nia Antoine's .500 percentage vs. Little Rock marked the second time at or above the mark (.536 at GS).
WINNING BOTH WAYS: Sun Belt-opening weekend, the Ragin' Cajuns displayed their offensive prowess in sweeping the Georgia trip. This past weekend, it was the defense which was key – specifically blocking where the team held a combined 23-13 edge over Arkansas State and Little Rock.
HEY THERE, HEBERT: Freshman Lexi Hebert had her strongest showing to date on the back row over the weekend. She tied her season-high digs total with 16 vs. ASU, then followed up with a new season-high of 17 vs. Little Rock.
LAST LEG TO 1,000: Senior Stacey Reilly's weekend kills total moved her career amount to 913, continuing her climb toward the 1,000 mark. Already with 1,000 career digs, she's seeking to become the first Cajun with a 1,000-1,000 career since Priscilla Lima (1999-02).
DAVIS DIGS IT: Sydney Davis upped her season digs total to 294 following the Arkansas State-Little Rock weekend. She's now six shy of reaching 300 in a season for the third time in her career (376 in 2015 as a freshman; 508 in 2016 as a sophomore).
RETURNING TO FORM: As a team, the Ragin' Cajuns picked up 23 blocks (11 vs. ASU, 12 vs. LR) last weekend. The 2.56 average per set marked the highest weekend total since averaging 3.07 per set during the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic (Sept. 1-2).
THE WIZ KID: Freshman Hali Wisnoskie has produced 169 kills so far this season, putting the Columbus, Texas, native on pace (31 kills shy) to become the first freshman with 200 in a season since Stacey Reilly in 2014. Her rapid pace toward 200 was spearheaded by three straight weekend's of 30-plus kills during the pre-conference tournaments (Sawyer Camillo Classic, Rice Adidas Invitational and Chi-State Invitational).
FINE-TUNED HITTING: The Cajuns have hit above .200 in each match of the current five-match winning streak. The team ranks third in the Sun Belt with a .217 season hitting percentage.
IT STARTS WITH DEFENSE: One of the Ragin' Cajuns' goals is to have the top defense in the Sun Belt. After six weeks, the team leads in digs (16.81/set) and sits fourth in blocks (2.27/set).
CLOSING ON RECORD: Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot increased her wins total as Ragin' Cajuns head coach to 129 following last weekend's home sweep of Arkansas State and Little Rock. She's now seven (7) wins shy of tying Wilo Colon's program-record 136 victories.
UP NEXT
The Ragin' Cajuns continue a week-long series of matches against Louisiana schools over the weekend with a Sun Belt Conference home-and-home against ULM.
The pair of outings with the Warhawks starts Friday in Monroe in a 6:30 p.m. match at Fant-Ewing Coliseum and finishes Sunday at 2 p.m. inside EKL.
