Cajuns to face host A&M-Corpus Christi in 3rd-place match
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team (8-7) split a pair of matches on Friday at the 50th-annual HEB Tournament of Champions, earning an opening-round 4-0 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley before dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 15 Texas in the semfinals at the Thomas J. Henry Center.
"The guys had a solid process for doubles," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "We talk about that all the time. In singles, we got off to a good start at 2, 3 and 6. Coleman [Wahlborg] did a good job winning with the two prong attack. He was very physical and he mentally beat his opponent down today. Jake [Wynan] played good in key moments to close the match at No. 3."
In the 4-0 win over UT Rio Grande Valley, the Cajuns swept doubles as junior Will Huyton and freshman Arthur Libaud defeated Yehonatan Kaufman and Ethan Ammon, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Senior Edgar Lopez and junior Eric Perez closed out doubles at the No. 1 spot with a 6-4 win over UTRGV's Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jansen.
In singles, Wahlborg defeated Cosme Jubera, 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets. Libaud picked up a win at the No. 2 spot, defeating Ammon, 6-2, 6-2, while Wynan sealed the victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Kaufman.
In the tournament semifinal round against Texas (9-5), the Longhorns' Michael Riechmann defeated Huyton, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Adrian Ortiz prevailed, 6-1, 6-4 over Wynan at No. 3, while John Mee beat sophomore Vlad Kramarov, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5. Colin Markes ended the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Wahlborg at No. 6 singles.
The Cajuns will play defending champion and host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (10-5) on Saturday in the third-place match at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will be the second between the schools this season with Louisiana claiming a 4-2 win over the then No. 65-ranked Islanders on Feb. 17 at Cajun Courts.
