Trosclair Lifts Cajuns To 4-2 Victory Over No. 25 Rice

HOUSTON, Texas. – Senior Stefan Trosclair provided the heroics on Sunday night as his two-run blast in the eighth lifted the sixth-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team to a 4-2 victory over No. 25 Rice in the final game of the Shriners College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
Freshman right-hander Nick Lee notched his first career victory for the Ragin' Cajuns (4-3) limiting the Owls (3-5) to two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings work. Lee struck out five in the game and retired 10 of the last 11 batters that he faced.
Junior Jevin Huval earned his first career as he came in and retired six of the seven batters he faced tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Huval struck out one and did not allow a free pass.
Rice starter Blake Fox was handed his second loss of the season as he gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 7.1 innings. Fox struck out four in the outing with one walk.
Joe Robbins and Kyle Clement each had a pair of hits to lead the way offensively for Louisiana. The Cajuns outhit Rice 8-4 in the contest.
The Ragin' Cajuns got on the board in the top of the first as Robbins came home to score on a ball hit to second by Stefan Trosclair. Robbins led off the game with a double to left and then moved to third on a sac bunt by Brenn Conrad.
In the bottom of the second, Dayne Wunderlich double home a run to tie the contest at 1-all. Two batters later, Cody Staab put the Owls in front 2-1 as he doubled down the left field line to score Wunderlich.
Rice would hold onto the lead until the top of the fifth when Robbins singled home Brian Mills to even the contest at 2-all. Mills reached on a fielder's choice with one out and stole second.
Trosclair came through with the big hit in the top of the eighth as he launched a two-run homer off of the foul poll down the left field line to give the Cajuns a 2-run edge. The home run is the first of the season for Trosclair and the 17th of his career.
Huval came on for the Cajuns in the bottom half of the eighth as he shut the door on the Owls only allowing on runner to reach in two innings of work.
Both Lee and Robbins were named to the 2016 Shriners College Classic All-Tournament Team. Robbins went 6-for-12 in the tournament and drove in two runs and had three extra base hits.
The Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field as the squad faces New Orleans in the first of two midweek games. Following the matchup with the Privateers, the Cajuns will go on the road Wednesday to face McNeese State in Lake Charles, La.
