Louisiana Battles Waves In Final Non-Conference Tuneup

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team plays its final non-conference game before opening Sun Belt Conference action at the end of the month when it entertains West Coast Conference member Pepperdine on Tuesday at the Cajundome.
 
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will also be broadcast in the Lafayette area on KHXT 107.9-FM and ESPN 1420-AM.
 
Louisiana (9-3) recorded a 76-71 victory at New Orleans on Saturday behind 27 points from Jay Wright. Freshman Justin Miller scored 11 points and Frank Bartley added 10 as the Ragin' Cajuns grabbed 19 offensive rebounds that led to a 20-4 advantage in second-chance points and overcame an impressive second-half performance by the Privateers, which shot 14-for-25 (56.0 percent) in the second half and 26-for-52 (50.0 percent for the game).
 
Bryce Washington grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for Louisiana, but had his string of six straight double-doubles snapped after being held to eight points. The junior recorded a career-best five steals in the contest at Louisiana forced 17 turnovers and recorded 11 steals.
 
Bartley leads Louisiana, and is second in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring, at 17.7 points per game with Wright (14.7), Washington (14.3) and Miller (10.8) averaging in double figures. Washington, who has nine double-doubles on the season, leads the Sun Belt Conference with 12.0 rebounds per contest.
 
Short-handed Pepperdine (4-6) returns to action after more than a week off for final exams. The Waves, in the midst of a six-game roadtrip, open a trip against Louisiana before concluding at Montana on Thursday.
 
Lamond Murray, Jr., leads Pepperdine in scoring at 20.9 points per game with Chris Reyes (15.0) and Jeremy Major (12.1) next. Major enters the game needing seven points to reach the 1,000-point mark in his career.
 
Reyes leads the Waves with 8.1 rebounds per game with Major averaging a team-high 4.6 assists.

STORY LINES
• Louisiana plays its final non-conference game of the 2016-17 season tonight when it battles West Coast Conference opponent Pepperdine at the Cajundome.
 
• The meeting is the fifth overall between the schools since the 1967-68 season, and the just the third on either campus. The all-time series is tied, 2-2.
 
• Louisiana claimed a 119-90 victory over the Waves in the only meeting between the schools in Lafayette (Dec. 8, 1978).
 
• Tonight's game is the second of a home-and-home series between the schools with Pepperdine claiming a 79-59 victory last season at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
 
RAGIN' CAJUNS NOTES
• Louisiana continues to lead the Sun Belt Conference in several offensive and defensive categories. The Ragin' Cajuns are tops in the SBC in scoring offense (86.4), scoring margin (+13.9), rebounding margin (+9.5), steals (8.8) and turnover margin (+3.9).
 
• Louisiana also paces the Sun Belt Conference in average attendance (3,246) through six games this season (three at Cajundome, three at Blackham Coliseum).
 
• The Ragin' Cajuns are one of four Sun Belt Conference teams with nine wins during the 2016-17 season (through games of Dec. 18). Arkansas State (9-2), Little Rock (9-2), Louisiana (9-3) and UTA (9-3) are the trendsetters in the league through the first half of the season.
 
Bryce Washington is the lone player in the Sun Belt Conference that is currently averaging a double-double (14.3 points per game, 12.0 rebounds per game).
