LAFAYETTE, La. – After taking off eight weeks following the conclusion of the fall practice season, the sixth-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team opened spring workouts on Wednesday in preparation for the 2016 season.

"We had a good fall and were able to enjoy the holidays with the break, but now it is time to get back to work," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "While we appreciate being honored with the rankings and preseason All-American honors, we have to back it up. The only rankings that matter are the ones at the end of the year.

"We liked the progress that we made in the fall," Robichaux added. "But we also know that we have work left to do to get to where we want to be for the start of the season."

The Cajuns are ranked in each of the three preseason polls released to date coming in at No. 6 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, No. 10 in the Perfect Game poll and No. 18 in the D1Baseball poll.

Louisiana returns 19 players who saw action during the 2015 season including preseason All-American honorees Stefan Trosclair and Dylan Moore. The pair was recently tabbed to the Perfect Game All-America Third Team. Both Trosclair and Moore also received Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America honors last month.

In addition, the Ragin' Cajuns have 16 newcomers on the roster this season, part of the 2015 signing class that was ranked top 15 in the nation by D1Baseball and Collegiate Baseball.

Louisiana will have two weeks of workouts before the squad's first team practice on Jan. 29 at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. All practices and workouts are open to the public with early work starting at 1 p.m. and practices and workouts beginning around 2:30 p.m.

The Cajuns open the 2016 campaign at "The Tigue" on Friday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. in the first of three games against Sam Houston State.
