LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team returns to Earl K. Long Gym on Friday, Sept. 25 for its Sun Belt Conference home opener against ULM. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.
The Ragin' Cajuns (3-10, 0-2 Sun Belt) are set to appear on their home court for the first time since Sept. 8. The squad sports a 3-1 record (10-6 in sets) and is hitting .223 at Long Gym this season.
Friday's match is the lone contest for the Cajuns this weekend. It's also the first of three straight Sun Belt outings at home with Arkansas State and Appalachian State scheduled to visit next weekend (Oct. 2-3).
Louisiana seeks to break a five-match losing streak, which began Sept. 11 at the Adidas Rice Invitational.
Plagued by injuries early in the season, the Ragin' Cajuns are gradually returning to full strength. Over the last two weeks, Stacey Reilly began playing front row and Sara Mossakowski and Chloe Cordell resumed play.
"We are slowly getting people back, which is great," head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "Sara (Mossakowski) and Stacey (Reilly) were back together last weekend for the first time. Hopefully as they get their legs back underneath them, and our team gets back to a little more normalcy, we will begin to find success."
Mossakowksi tops the Cajuns offense averaging 2.57 kills per set. The senior outside hitter has reached nine kills in five of the six matches she's started.
Chanelle Gardner is one of the team's to point producers, averaging 2.44 kills (105 total) and 0.81 blocks (35 total) per set. The St. Martinville product has been her best at Long Gym, producing double digits in kills all four appearances this season.
Stacey Reilly and Sydney Davis anchor the back row defense. Reilly averages 3.41 digs per set and Davis nets 3.30 per set.
The Cajuns seek to rebound from a near miss in their last outing and record the first conference win of the season. Last Sunday, Texas State erased a 24-21 deficit in the opening set and rode the momentum swing to a sweep.
"I thought we played really well," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "It was hardest I've seen us fight this season, which was nice to see because that had been missing."
ULM (9-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) carries a four-match win streak into Friday's contest. The Warhawks have equaled last season's win total and are off to the third-best start in program history through the first 14 matches. The Warhawks are coming off back-to-back, five-set match victories, downing Georgia Southern and UAB on a road trip last week.
The Warhawks offense is paced by the quartet of Hope Pawlik (3.13), Taylor Zaeske (2.58), Hadley Swartz (2.27) and Kaitlyn Shearer (2.04) who each average over two kills per set.
The Ragin' Cajuns take a break from Sun Belt play after Friday's match vs. ULM, traveling to Hammond, La., to meet Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, Sept. 29 before returning to Earl K. Long Gym to meet Arkansas State on Friday. Oct. 2 and Appalachian State on Saturday, Oct. 3.
