NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns got a singles win from senior Damian Farinola, but top-seeded Troy took four singles points to advance to the Sun Belt Tournament finals with a 4-1 semifinals win over the Cajuns on Saturday at City Park and the Pepsi Tennis Center.
Farinola won his second match of the tournament and 13th singles win of the year, coming back from dropping the first set to take down Andy Lau (3-6, 6-1, 6-4) at No. 3 singles; however, it was the only point the defending champion Cajuns (14-13) could score against the Trojans (23-6), who entered the weekend ranked No. 60 in the nation in the latest ITA national rankings.
The Cajuns nearly pulled out a point at No. 1 singles as Edgar Lopez stretched Gabriel Dias to three sets before the Trojans top player edged out a win (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) that put Troy up 3-1 in the match at the time.
Daniel Bustamante gave the Trojans the initial lead with a straight-set win over Coleman Wahlborg (6-3, 6-2) on the No. 4 court before Hassan Ndayishimye upped the lead to 2-0 with a No. 2 singles win over Jake Wynan (7-5, 6-3).
The teams split points in the next two finishes at Nos. 1 and 3 before Pablo Moreno closed out the match with a No. 5 win over Jarred Wynan (6-3, 6-2).
Louisiana closes out the spring slate at 14-13 overall, including 3-2 against Sun Belt Conference competition.
