Cardinals Get By Cajuns, 5-2

LAFAYETTE, La. – Kelly Drew and Abby Johnson each picked up singles wins, but the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns could not hold off Lamar as the Cardinals picked up a 5-2 win on Wednesday at Cajun Courts.
Drew won in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) over Anna Spengler at No. 2 singles to move to 8-2 on the season in her true freshman year. Johnson also won for the fourth time this season in singles, dominating the third set for a (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) win over Hanna Elfving at No. 5 singles; however, Lamar (6-8) took the doubles point and four of six points in singles play to hand the Cajuns (3-12) the defeat.
Lamar scratched the scoreboard first with wins in all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead with the doubles point. Carolina Maso and Katya Lapayeva got the Cards halfway there with a (8-3) win over Nelo Phiri and Elena Sava on the top court before Anna Spengler and Andrea Ivanovic defeated Alexandra Way and Abby Johnson (8-3) to clinch the point.
In singles play, Phiri took the second set to push the Cardinals' top player to a deciding third set before falling (6-3, 3-6, 6-1). From there Lamar also managed to take points at Nos. 3, 4 and 6 singles, clinching the match with a (6-4, 7-5) win by Ivanovic over Sava on the No. 3 court.
The Cajuns will remain at home for their next two matches, jumping back into Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday when they host South Alabama at 2:00 p.m. They will then move out of conference for a March 31 meeting with Nicholls at 2:00 p.m. at Cajun Courts.
