Cajun Duo Shines, Despite 6-1 Loss At No. 34 Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas – Edgar Lopez and Damian Farinola teamed up to pick off their first ranked opponent of the season, but No. 24 Texas Tech swept through singles play to take a 6-1 decision over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.

The Cajuns (9-10) top duo earned their fourth doubles victory of the season by edging the Texas Tech (16-4) top pair of Felipe Soares and Hugo Dojas (7-5), who entered the match ranked No. 24 in the nation. That win, from a tandem who won 15 doubles matches together a year ago, was the first this season against a ranked doubles team and clinched the doubles point for an early 1-0 Cajun lead in the match.

Will Huyton and Jarred Wynan got the Cajuns out in front in doubles play with a (6-3) win over Jolan Cailleau and Alex Sendegeya at No. 2 doubles before Texas Tech's Connor Curry and Francisco Zambon evened things up with a (6-4) win over Vlad Kramarov and Coleman Wahlborg on the No. 3 court.

But that set the stage for Lopez and Farinola, who outlasted the Red Raider's top pair to put the Cajuns out in front.

However, the Red Raiders took control in singles play, surrendering just two sets in taking all six points. Jarred Wynan looked strong in No. 4 singles, taking the first set from Cailleau, ranked No. 109 in the nation in singles play, before narrowly falling in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). Huyton also took the first set from Sendegeya at No. 3 singles before falling (4-6, 6-2, 6-1).

The Cajuns now return home to face Alcorn State in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Cajun Courts on March 24.
