IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 75 Louisiana' Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team faced their fifth and sixth ranked opponents over the weekend, but could not come away with a victory, falling 4-0 to both No. 29 Drake on Sunday and No. 57 Iowa on Monday morning.
The Cajuns (6-7), who have now faced six nationally-ranked opponents in 13 matches, opened up the weekend against the No. 29 Bulldogs (12-3) in Des Moines, but fell behind early as Drake took the doubles point.
Damian Farinola and Edgar Lopez played a tight match in the No. 1 spot and were tied with Ben Lott and Bayo Phillips when doubles competition was halted. Drake's Alen Salibasic and Ben Mullis picked up a (6-4) win over Jake Wynan and Will Huyton before Matt Frost and Ravi Patel tallied the point with a (6-3) win over Coleman Wahlberg and Jarred Wynan at No. 2 doubles.
Jarred Wynan managed to take the opening set from Ben Stride at No. 5 singles, but trailed 5-2 in the second set when after the Bulldogs clinched the overall win. Drake got wins from a pair of nationally-ranked singles players, including No. 55 Salibasic's win over Jake Wynan in No. 1 singles play (6-4, 6-3). Lott, ranked 34th nationally, defeated Lopez (6-3, 6-4) in the No. 2 spot, while Frost knocked off Vlad Kramarov (6-4, 6-3) on the No. 5 court for the fourth Bulldog point.
The Cajuns then traveled to Iowa City on Monday morning after an alteration to the earlier schedule, playing only singles matches against the No. 57 Hawkeyes after an alteration in the schedule. But the Hawkeyes came out on fire, scoring points at Nos. 1, 4, 4 and 5 singles to quickly clinch the win.
After Josh Silverstein swept by Jarred Wynan (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5, Matt Hagan – ranked No. 79 nationally – scored the second Hawkeye point with a (6-2, 6-0) win over Jake Wynan.
Stieg Martens made it 3-0 with a (6-2, 6-2) win over Kramarov at No. 4 singles before Lefteris Theodoru finished things with a (6-2, 6-2) victory over Lopez at No. 3 singles.
The Cajuns now head to South Texas for the HEB Tournament of Champions, set for March 6-7 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
