Balanced Attack Carries Bobcats Past Cajuns
11/7/2015 9:39:00 PM | Volleyball
LAFAYETTE – A balanced attack which featured five players reaching five kills and a .346 team hitting percentage carried Texas State to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-19) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team in a Sun Belt Conference match Saturday at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-23, 1-14 Sun Belt) bounced back from Friday's sluggish outing against UT Arlington. Louisiana reached 12 kills each set, hit .167 and brought its digs average above 15 per set.
The Bobcats (17-11, 12-3 Sun Belt) were able to outlast the Ragin' Cajuns by hitting .278 or higher each set and committing no more than four attack errors in a set.
The lead changed hands four times in the first set before Texas State was able to register a 25-22 win. The Bobcats had to overcome early deficits to claim the second and third set. The squad overcame an 8-3 deficit in the second set and dug out of a 6-3 hole in the third set.
The loss eliminated the Ragin' Cajuns from contention for a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Championship. It's the first time since 2011 that the Ragin' Cajuns will miss the event.
The match was the second of a three-match homestand to end the season for the Ragin' Cajuns. Louisiana completes the homestand, and the 2015 season, on Friday, Nov. 13 vs. Georgia State at 6:30 p.m.
Sara Mossakowski led Louisiana's offense with 11 kills, her highest output since 10 kills vs. Georgia Southern on Oct. 16. The Frisco, Texas, native heads into her career finale needing 13 kills to reach 800.
Stacey Reilly added seven kills on 20 swings, the sixth time this season she's reached the tally. Chanelle Gardner posted three block solos increasing her season total to 20 which marks the second straight season hitting the mark.
Libero Sydney Davis collected 11 digs, marking the ninth straight match she's reached double figures and 20th in 28 matches overall.
Kelsey Weynard paced the Bobcats offense with 12 kills. Madison Daigle picked up nine kills on 17 swings and Kordan Kohl added seven kills on 15 swings.
The fourth and final lead change of the opening set came after Texas State received a kill from Weynard to draw a 7-all tie, then a block thrown up by Kohl and Morgan Lewis for an 8-7 lead.
Despite losing the lead, the Ragin' Cajuns kept their deficit at four points or less. A pair of block solos by Gardner pulled Louisiana within a point twice, the last at 23-22. However, a service error by Reilly returned the serve to the Bobcats and a kill by Lauren Kirch landed set point.
Sparked by four kills the Cajuns rolled off a 6-0 run to pull ahead 8-3 in the second set. A kill by Daigle ended the run, then four straight Cajuns attack errors brought the Bobcats into an 8-all tie.
Louisiana trailed 14-13 after a block thrown up by Gardner and Keely Hayes, but Texas State finished strong by winning 11 of the next 13 rallies to open a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Bobcats used a 19-12 advantage in kills in the third set to complete the sweep. Each time the Cajuns drew close, the Bobcats found a kill.
Leading 13-12, it was Shelby Vas Matt with the score for Texas State. At 19-17, a kill by Haley Henderson kept the Cajuns at a distance, then after an attack error by Gardner three straight kills (Krich, Erin Hoppe, Henderson) had the visitors sitting at set and match point.
The Ragin' Cajuns dropped their 10th consecutive match dating back to Oct. 10 at South Alabama. The Bobcats picked up their fourth consecutive straight sets victory.
