11/12/2015 10:11:00 PM | Women's Basketball

LAFAYETTE – Four Cajuns, led by junior guard Jaylyn Gordon (27), reached double-figures scoring as the Louisiana women's basketball team ended the 2015 exhibition season with a 77-69 win over Xavier (La.) University Thursday night at the Cajundome.

The evening started with both teams getting off to slow starts. The in-state foes made just 4-of-15 shots apiece (26.7%) in the opening quarter. Freshman center Breionne Cooper scored four of the Cajuns' 10 first quarter points, adding two rebounds.

The Gold Nuggets evened the contest at 10-10 just 54 seconds into the second quarter, but the Cajuns pulled away, scoring eight unanswered points over the next 2:11, four coming from Gordon.

Louisiana's lead reached 11 with 3:14 remaining in the first half following senior Kia Wilridge's layup. Xavier (La.) closed the gap, ending the half on a 10-3 run to pull to within 29-25 at the intermission.

After trading baskets on the first five possessions of the third quarter, the duo of Gordon and Wilridge combined for 15 of the team's next 17 points, pushing the lead to 52-38 with just over 2 ½ minutes remaining in the stanza. Nine of Gordon's game-high 27 points came in the third quarter.

The Cajuns maintained a double-digit lead through nearly 9 ½ minutes of the fourth quarter. The lead reached as many as 17 (66-49) and never dipped below eight for the rest of the game. The Cajuns bench came up with seven of the team's 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Louisiana shot 46.2% (24-of-52) from the floor including 30% (3-of-10) from three. The Cajuns found success at the free-throw line, knocking down 26-of-31 shots from the charity stripe. Nearly half (38) of the team's points came in the paint.

Wilridge finished one rebound short of a double-double, tallying 17 points, nine boards and three assists.

The Cajuns open the regular season this Sunday, November 15 for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Ole Miss.
