Long Earns College Sports Madness Preseason Honors

Long named Preseason Player of the Year; Wright named as second-team Preseason SBC pick
LAFAYETTE – With the start of the 2015-16 season just over a month away, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball player Shawn Long picked up the first of an expected multitude of awards when he was named as the Preseason Mid-Major Player of the Year by CollegeSportsMadness.com.
Long, a 6-foot-11 senior from Morgan City, La., was also named by the organization as the Preseason Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and was joined by junior Jay Wright, a second-team selection.
Long averaged 16.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game last season for the Ragin' Cajuns, where he helped Louisiana to a 22-14 record and was named to the Lou Henson All-America team and was named a first-team All-Sun Belt and All-Louisiana selection.
A member of the U.S. men's basketball team that claimed the bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games, Long enters his final season in a Ragin' Cajuns uniform as the NCAA active leader in double-doubles (52) and total rebounds (1,036). Long is ranked second among active NCAA players in rebound average (10.3) and is seventh in blocked shots (212).
With 1,036 rebounds in his first three seasons, Long enters the 2015-16 campaign 28 rebounds shy of tying Roy Ebron (1971-73) for the most in school history (1,064). The senior ranks seventh overall in scoring (1,700).
Long was joined on the Mid-Major team by A.J. English of Iona, Jalen West of Northwestern State, Thomas Walkup of Stephen F. Austin and Jameel Warney of Stony Brook.
Wright, a 6-1 junior from Rincon, Ga., earned third-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors in his first season with the Ragin' Cajuns after averaging 9.1 points, 3.6 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 0.0 steals. He was named a Lefty Driesell Finalist as the top defensive player in nation by CollegeInsider.com and hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds remaining in a 71-70 win at Sam Houston State in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
He finished tied for fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in assists and spent part of the summer competing on Far East Tour with Reach USA (May 10-24), averaging 11.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in seven games.
Louisiana, which finished 22-14 last season, will open the season on Nov. 9 against Mississippi College in an exhibition game before officially tipping off the 2015-16 campaign against Louisiana College at the Cajundome.
