LOS CABOS, Mexico - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team got off to a tough start in the first round on Sunday at the Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate as the squad sits in seventh at 11-over par (299). The three-day event is being played on the Cabo Del Sol Ocean and Desert courses.
"We had a tough start on a tough course," head coach Theo Sliman said. "From one to five, we played very mediocre. You can't expect to be a top in team golf when all five players play mediocre golf. I feel that I did not do a good job preparing this group for the first day. We are only a third of the way thru this event, and I have the utmost confidence that our team can finish strong. I also have the utmost confidence that expectations for the next two days will be clear. It will take a collective effort to minimize mistakes and finish strong."
Georgia State leads the tournament through the first 18 holes at 4-under (284), while UC Irvine is two strokes back in second at 2-under (286). Georgia Southern (+1, 289), UT Arlington (+3, 291) and Cal State Northridge (+3, 291) round out the top 5 teams. The Panther's Nathan Mallonee sits atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under (67).
Senior Haraldur Magnus paces the Cajuns with a 74 (+2) in the first round to finish the day in a tie for 21st. Ragnar Gardarsson, Triston Elston and Andres Navarrete are one stroke back of Magnus in a tie for 29th after carding a 75, while Fernando Cruz Valle's 78 (+6) has him in a tie for 40th.
Louisiana is paired with Seattle and Stephen F. Austin for the second round. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
