BOONE, N.C. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team begins its final road trip of the 2015 season on Friday, Oct. 30 in Boone, N.C., facing Appalachian State at the Holmes Center. The match begins at 5:30 p.m. (CDT) and is being broadcast on ESPN3.
After Friday's match, the Ragin' Cajuns (5-19, 1-10 Sun Belt) travel to Atlanta for the second leg of the trip and final road match of the season. The contest against Georgia State at the GSU Sports Arena is set for 5 p.m. (CDT).
After the weekend's action, Louisiana returns to Earl K. Long Gym for the final three matches of the season. The stretch begins Nov. 6-7 as UT Arlington and Texas State visit Long Gym and ends Nov. 13 with a rematch against Georgia State.
The Ragin' Cajuns and Mountaineers (17-4, 10-0 Sun Belt) are meeting for the second time this season. App State claimed a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-9) win at Long Gym back on Oct. 3. After a close first set, the Mountaineers committed only two attack errors over their final 63 swings to close out the Cajuns.
Louisiana takes to the court for the first time in a week, last playing on Oct. 23 at Little Rock. Despite falling for the sixth straight outing, the Cajuns showed grit on defense averaging their Sun Belt play-best of 17 digs per set (51 total) led by freshman Sydney Davis' match-high 18 digs.
The Cajuns have battled injury all season long. Starters Jessica Bartczyszyn (setter) and McKenzie John (right side) were lost to injury and starting outside hitters Sara Mossakowski and Stacey Reilly missed time with injury. Mossakowski received treatment for a lingering back injury and did not play in matches at McNeese State and Little Rock last week.
Louisiana has had a balanced offense in Sun Belt Conference play with seven players averaging at least one kill per set. The group includes: Chanelle Gardner (2.12), Mossakowski (1.97), Chloe Cordell (1.71), Hanna Rovira (1.60), Keely Hayes (1.23), Katey Kyle (1.22) and Nia Antoine (1.20).
Davis enters the weekend on a string of five straight matches reaching double digits in digs including the 18 at Little Rock that were the match's highest total. Having competed in 88 sets, she's one of five Cajuns freshmen who have seen playing time in 30-plus sets joining Hanna Rovira (51), Hannah Henry (49), Nia Antonie (44) and Julia Pasch (33).
Keely Hayes became the club's setter after Bartczyszyn was injured in practice prior to the South Alabama match (Oct. 10). Now in her third full week running the Cajuns' offense, Hayes has averaged 7.39 assists per set and 2.35 digs per set in her first six starts. Utilizing the dump kill, she's averaged 1.13 kills per set.
The entry of Hayes into the starting lineup and increased playing time for Chloe Cordell has strengthened the Cajuns' service. Louisiana is averaging 1.3 aces per set the past three weeks with six aces apiece from the duo leading the charge.
App State joins Arkansas State as the only two remaining undefeated teams in Sun Belt play and brings a 13-match overall win streak into Friday's contest. As a team, the Mountaineers currently rank sixth nationally in hitting percentage (.289), sixth in kills per set (14.60) and seventh in assists per set (13.64).
Georgia State (4-16, 0-10 Sun Belt) hosts South Alabama on Friday prior to Ragin' Cajuns' visit. Strong performances from Kitan Ajanaku and Gabby Serafin have paced the Panthers as of late. Ajanaku finished with 14 kills on .323 hitting in GSU's last outing, her second straight match with double-figure kills. Serafin tallied 64 digs in nine sets (6.60 digs/set) against UT Arlington and Appalachian State last week and was named the Sun Belt's Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week.
