MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Ragin' Cajuns freshman golfer Triston Elston finished the first day of The Intercollegiate at The Grove in third place after carding a round of 2-under par (70) on Sunday at the par-72, 7,368-yard Grove Golf Course.
"I'm really glad to see Triston get off to a good start with his second round under par this season," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Hopefully he can continue to build on a strong first round and come away with a good finish."
As a team, Louisiana finished the round in sixth at 13-over par (301), while Lipscomb leads the tournament with an 18-hole score of even par (288). Troy (+3, 291), No. 26 Kentucky (+5, 293), Middle Tennessee (+6, 294) and WKU (+10, 298) round out the top 5 teams.
"Really disappointed with the collective performance of the team today" Sliman said. "I expected more from us in the first round our of final tournament of the fall. Unfortunately this has been the theme for us throughout the fall and it goes back to our mental approach. That is something that we can control, and we need to show some mental toughness going forward if we want to be successful. This group needs to have more of a sense of urgency in the opening round. We still have a great opportunity in front of us. I expect all five guys to bounce back and post a good round tomorrow."
Stoney Crouch of Lipscomb leads the individual leaderboard with a score of 4-under (68) after the first round.
Junior Fernando Cruz Valle ended the day in a tie for 25th at 4-over (76). Ragnar Gargarsson is one stroke back of Cruz Valle in a tie for 34th, and Haraldur Magnus sits in a tie for 40th at 6-over (78). Andres Navarrete wrapped up the scoring in a tie for 65th at 12-over (84).
The Cajuns are paired with Middle Tennessee and WKU in the second round. Play gets underway at 9 a.m. with action starting off of holes one and ten. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
