LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team begins a weekend homestand at Earl K. Long Gym on Friday, Oct. 16 hosting Georgia Southern at 6:30 p.m., in the lone matchup between the two teams this season.
Friday's match will be followed by a rematch with Troy on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. The Trojans rebounded from an opening-set loss last Saturday in Troy to claim a 3-1 (23-25, 25-9, 29-27, 25-15) victory over the Ragin' Cajuns.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-15, 1-7 Sun Belt) are beginning the second half of their Sun Belt Conference schedule with this weekend's matches. Louisiana plays five of its final eight SBC matches at Long Gym.
Both Georgia Southern (6-13, 1-6 Sun Belt) and Troy (11-11, 4-4 Sun Belt) visit ULM prior to arriving in Lafayette. The Cajuns and Eagles both trail ULM (11-10, 2-5 Sun Belt) by one game in the win column in the SBC standings for the final spot in the conference tournament.
Louisiana seeks to snap a three-match losing streak at Long Gym, all Sun Belt matches. The Cajuns dropped their SBC home opener to ULM in five sets on Sept. 25 and were swept by Arkansas State and Appalachian State Oct. 2-3.
The Cajuns are coming off a three-match road trip at ULM, South Alabama and Troy in which a trio of players experienced a breakthrough.
Sophomore Chloe Cordell led the offense with 31 kills over 12 sets of action (2.58 kills/set) capped off by a career-high 17 kills at Troy. Freshman Hanna Rovira saw her role expand, and she delivered averaging 1.31 kills per set and 2.38 digs per set.
Keely Hayes subbed in at setter for Jessica Bartczyszyn at ULM helping toughen up the Cajuns serve, then took over the position after Bartczyszyn suffered a hand injury in practice prior to the South Alabama contest. Hayes notched a double-double (24 assists/12 digs) at USA, then narrowly missed a second straight double-double at Troy (33 assists/nine digs).
"Keely (Hayes) stepped in and led us to the win at ULM, and did a great job at South Alabama and Troy," head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "Chole (Cordell) stepped up against Troy and hit almost .300 with a 6-foot-3 blocker in front of her the whole match."
Senior Sara Mossakowski, who has posted at least eight kills in 10 of 13 matches started, leads Louisiana averaging 2.41 kills per set. Her 10 kills last Saturday at Troy marked her highest output since a career-high 20 at Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 29.
Junior Chanelle Gardner, who averages 2.39 kills per set, teams up with Mossakowski to pace the Cajuns offense. The St. Martinville product leads in blocks with 56 (11 BS, 45 BA).
Gardner has led a balanced attack in Sun Belt play. She averages 2.32 kills per set to lead a group of seven players who average at least one kill per set in league matches.
Georgia Southern, like Louisiana, is coming off its first Sun Belt win of the season during last week's rivalry matchups (swept Georgia State). Three juniors who received medical redshirts last season – Alex Beecher, Crysten Curry and Katie Bange - have returned to the lineup this season. Beecher ranks eighth in the nation in digs per set (5.68 digs/set), Bange has six double-doubles serving as the team's setter and Curry ranks seventh in career blocks (289) in program history.
Troy completed a 6-0 homestand on Tuesday with a five-set win over Florida A&M. The Trojans are 1-9 away from Troy this season and are winless on the opposition's home floor (0-6). Blair Winston, who tallied a match-high 19 kills against the Cajuns last Saturday, is averaging a team-best 3.06 kills per set. Ali Dowdall leads the Troy defense with 4.86 digs per set, ranking fourth in the Sun Belt. On the front line, Darby Griff has posted 93 blocks and leads the Trojans with 1.09 blocks per set.
