Troy Bounces Back and Defeats Louisiana in Four Sets
10/10/2015 9:00:00 PM | Volleyball
TROY, Ala. – Troy bounced back from an opening-set defeat to capture a 3-1 (23-25, 25-9, 29-27, 25-15) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team Saturday evening at Trojan Arena in Troy, Ala.
The Trojans' ability to fight off set point after falling behind 24-21 in the third set turned the tide in the hosts' favor. Three straight kills by Sarah Landis drew a 24-all tie, extending the set, and Troy (10-11, 4-4 Sun Belt) eventually won 29-27 for a 2-1 lead in the match following kills by Darby Griff and Reina Terry.
Louisiana (5-15, 1-7 Sun Belt) was limited to a -.048 hitting percentage in the fourth set allowing the Trojans to lead from start-to-finish in a 25-15 win in the match-clinching fourth set.
The loss was the Cajuns second straight to close out a three-match road trip that began with a five-set win at ULM on Wednesday.
Saturday's contest was the first of two between Louisiana and Troy over a one-week span. The two teams have a rematch on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Earl K. Long Gym.
Chloe Cordell topped the Cajuns offense with a season-and career-high 17 kills. The Enid, Okla., native wrapped up the road trip with 31 kills over 12 sets (2.58 kills/set).
Sara Mossakowski joined Cordell in double figures with 10 kills, her highest output since a career-high 20 at Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 29.
Keely Hayes, filling in for injured starting setter Jessica Bartczyszyn, collected 33 assists and scooped nine digs narrowly missing a double-double for the second straight match.
Blair Winston posted 19 kills to lead the way for Troy. Landis finished with 10 kills on a .400 hitting percentage and was the second of three in double-digit kills, joining Symone Shaw who recorded 12 kills.
The Trojans held a 59-42 advantage in kills and out-hit the Cajuns .222-.117. Louisiana was limited to sub-zero hitting percentages in the second (-.120) and fourth (-.048) set.
Behind a match-high .333 hitting percentage in the first set, the Ragin' Cajuns grabbed a 1-0 lead. Louisiana tallied 15 kills on just 33 swings.
Mossakowski snapped an 18-all tie with a kill, then back-to-back blocks followed by another Mossakowski kill extended the Cajuns lead to 22-18. Troy used a 5-0 run to cut its deficit to 24-23, but an attack error by Leah Causey ended the scoring spree and gave the set to Louisiana.
The Trojans pulled even in the match as the Cajuns were held to four kills and the hosts hit .429 in a 25-9 triumph in the second set.
Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot and her squad return to Earl K. Long Gym next weekend for a pair of matches. First up is the season's lone matchup with Georgia Southern on Friday, Oct. 16 followed by the rematch with Troy.
