Cajuns took two of three against defending national champs at Lamson
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - After a day off from opening day action at the Women's College World Series, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team will return to play as it faces defending national champion Oklahoma in an elimination game at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium / OGE Energy Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and can be heard in the Lafayette area on KPEL-AM (1420). The winner will advance to face top-seeded Oregon at 8:30 p.m.
Louisiana (49-9-1), the national No. 6 seed in the 64-team NCAA Regional field, dropped a 4-1 contest to Kentucky in the opening round on Thursday as three errors led to pair of unearned runs.
Lexie Elkins provided the offense for the Ragin' Cajuns as her first-inning home run tied the game at 1-1. The home for Elkins, her 23rd of the season, tied her with former Ragin' Cajuns standouts Christi Orgeron (2011) and Holly Tankersley (2008) for the second-most in a single-season in school history. Elkins' RBI, her 73rd of the season, moved her to within one of tying Tankersley (74, 2008) for fifth on the school's single-season list.
Oklahoma (50-12) collected a first-inning home run by Shelby Pendley, but the Sooners were handcuffed the rest of the way Alabama starter Jaclyn Traina in a 6-2 loss to the No. 2-ranked Crimson Tide on Thursday. The seventh-seeded Sooners reached base on five walks, but Alabama erased a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth.
The Ragin' Cajuns earned a series win over the Sooners in mid-March at Lamson Park. After Oklahoma claimed a 13-5 win in the series opener, Christina Hamilton allowed one run on five hits, tossing back-to-back complete games, including a one-hit shutout, to lead the Ragin' Cajuns to a doubleheader sweep (7-0, 3-1) on March 15.
