MOBILE, Ala. – The second-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns picked up a 7-3 victory over ULM in the first round of games on Wednesday at Stanky Field to set a new school record with 50 wins on the season.
The Cajuns (50-7, 26-4 Sun Belt) had won 49 games three times previous to this season. The win marks the 13th straight against the Warhawks (22-35, 11-19 Sun Belt) and seventh straight overall. It also moves Louisiana two away from the Sun Belt record for wins in a season set by South Florida in 1986.
"We knew that (Tyler) Bray was going to be stingy so our biggest thing was to keep the game as close as we could," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Our hitters continued to peck away at him until we were able to get into the bullpen and break the game open. I thought we played a good ball game especiallly considering we knew this one was going to be close. We have a bunch of guys who are grinders and they grinded out a win today."
Louisiana moves on to face Texas State tomorrow at 4 p.m. in a winner's bracket game with the winning team earning a day off Friday.
Reliever Matt Plitt notched the victory for the Ragin' Cajuns to move to 2-0 on the year after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings to close out the game.
Austin Robichaux posted a quality start in the game holding ULM to two runs on five hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts in a no decision.
Alex Dumaine was tabbed with the loss for the Warhawks giving up three runs without recording an out.
Bray was strong for ULM in his first career start holding the Cajuns to three runs (two earned) on five hits in seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
Offensively, Louisiana outhit ULM 7-5 in the contest led by Tyler Girouard and Kyle Clement with two hits apiece. Clement scored two runs and drove in one, while Jace Conrad scored twice and had two walks. Chase Compton increased his on base streak to 20 games and is the fifth player to reach a streak of 20-plus games this year.
Ross Moore put the Warhawks up 2-0 in the top of the first sending a single back up the middle to score Keelin Rasch and Kodie Tidwell.
The Cajuns cut into the ULM lead in the bottom of the third when Ryan Leonards brought home Kyle Clement on a sac fly to center to make the score 2-1. Clement led off the inning with a single to left and then moved to third on a Blake Trahan double.
In the bottom of the fifth, Seth Harrison tied the contest at 2-all bringing home Clement on ground ball hit to second. Clement recorded his second straight leadoff single and moved to third on a single by Leonards. Leonards extended his hit streak to 12 games with the single.
The Warhawks threatened in the top of the sixth after a leadoff triple by Tidwell. Robichaux was up to the challenge as he got back-to-back ground outs and then struck out Chet Simoneaux to end the inning.
Michael Strentz put Louisiana in front in the bottom half of the sixth driving in Conrad on a sac fly to deep center. Conrad walked to lead off the inning and then reached third after stealing second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Simoneaux.
ULM evened the game in the top of the eighth when pinch hitter Anthony Herrera reached on an error and scored on a ground ball hit to short by Moore.
The Cajuns exploded for four runs on two hits with two walks in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead. Chase Compton brought home the first run of the inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Girouard. In the next at bat, Strentz singled up the middle to score Conrad. After Adams scored on wild pitch, Clement brought home Strentz on a squeeze bunt to make the score 7-3.
