Cruz Valle, Strandemo In Contention At SBC Championship

SAUCIER, Miss. – Freshman Fernando Cruz Valle and sophomore Thomas Strandemo both finished the second day in the top 10 at the 2014 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship as the Louisiana golf team slipped into sixth place carding a score of 8-over par (296) on Tuesday at Grand Bear Golf Club.
 
"I am frustrated and disappointed in our result today," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Even though our team has pretty much taken itself out of the running for the championship, we still have a couple guys in contention. I look for them to have a good round tomorrow and put themselves in a position to earn all-conference honors."
 
Cruz Valle shot a 71 (-1) for the second straight day to move to 2-under (142) for the tournament finishing the day in a tie for sixth place, while Strandemo sits in eighth at 1-over (145).
 
"Fernando is solidifying his chances at earning the freshman of the year honors with his performance this week," Sliman added. " Both he and Thomas have a shot at playing their way into the all-conference team."
 
Haraldur Magnus ended the day inside the top 25 in a tie for 17th at 4-over (148) carding a 73 (+1) in the round.
 
The Cajuns are two strokes back of WKU and Texas State for fourth place posting a two-round score of 19-over (595).
 
No. 44 Georgia State has taken over the lead at the event with its second round of even par (288) after 36-holes. UT Arlington (+2, 578), South Alabama (+8, 584), WKU (+17, 593) and Texas State (+17, 593) round out the top 5 teams.
 
Stuart Smallwood of Texas State leads on his own heading into the final round after posting a score of 4-under (68) for the second straight day.
 
Both Ross Davis and Christian Verrougstraete are tied for 49th headed into the final 18 holes at 17-over (161).
 
Louisiana is paired with WKU and Texas State in the final round. Play gets underway at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring for the event is available on Golfstat.com.
