Women’s Tennis Comes Up Short Against Southern Miss, 4-3

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team lost a hard fought 4-3 match to Southern Miss in the regular season finale on Sunday at Cajun Courts.

"This was a tough battle for our team today," head coach Greg Harkins said. "Unfortunately this is our third 4-3 loss in a row. Winning is not easy and we are working hard to try and break through. I give a lot of credit to Southern Miss for coming in putting up a heck of a fight in a tremendous battle. The regular season is over now and we need to use everything we have learned this season next week at the conference championship."

Despite Julie Cremers and Alexandra Way combining to win 8-3 on court three in doubles, the Golden Eagles (10-12) picked up the doubles point with victories at positions one and two.

The Cajuns (6-16) jumped out to a 2-1 advantage after singles wins on courts five and six. Way recorded a strong 6-2, 6-1 win against Kathrin Waidner at the No. 6 position, while Juliette Clement defeated Alex Kitchen, 6-0, 6-3, at line five.

Southern Miss picked up the next three points to take the match. Mathitha Dadireddy clinched the match on court two claiming a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Nicole Breaux.

Melissa Burckhartt added the final point for the Cajuns on court three defeating Lisa Noderer, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

Louisiana returns to action on Thursday, April 17 as the team heads to New Orleans, La. for the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championship.
