Magnus Wins Individual Title At Memphis Intercollegiate

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sophomore Haraldur Magnus picked up right where he left off on Tuesday carding a score of 2-under par (70) to win the individual title at the Memphis Intercollegiate hosted at the Colonial Country Club.

Magnus started the day in fifth and overcame a three-stroke deficit to finish the tournament at 1-under (215) and pick up his first collegiate victory.

"I was obviously very happy with Haraldur's performance," head coach Theo Sliman said. "To start the tournament at 6-over and then fight back to be in the winner's circle is something else and very impressive for a sophomore to do. To win a college tournament is tough enough in itself. He was able to keep his mental focus and close out the round strong."

"It is awesome to win," Magnus said. "This is a big step forward for me to reach one of my goals already. I had a bad start, but I was able to gather myself and turn things around. I didn't even know I had won until I had finished my round and saw I had the lead."

Magnus is the first Cajuns golfer to win a tournament since 2011 when Andrew Noto claimed the individual title at the David Toms Intercollegiate.

The Cajuns also made a move on the final day as a team climbing two spots to finish the event in third at 28-over (892) after posting the second lowest team score of the day at 6-over (294).

"I am proud of the team," Sliman added. "We had a poor middle round, but we were able to get past it and make a move today. Shooting the second lowest round of the day I think is going to springboard this team into the final three tournaments."

No. 40 Memphis claimed the team title with a score of 10-over (874). South Alabama (+25, 889), Louisiana (+28, 892), Cincinnati (+32, 896) and Arkansas State (+32, 896) round out the top five teams.

Sophomore Ross Davis recorded his best finish of the year carding a 70 (-2) in the final round to place in a tie for ninth at 5-over (221).

Fernando Cruz Valle also finished in the top 25 for Louisiana in a tie for 18th at 8-over (224). Christian Verrougstraete ended the day in a tie for 44th at 16-over (232), while Thomas Strandemo closed out the scoring for the squad in 58th at 19-over (235)

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action next Monday as they head to West Point, Miss. for the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
