WEST POINT, Miss. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team fell six spots on the final day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship to finish in a tie for 12th at Old Waverly Golf Course.
"I am disappointed in the way we finished," head coach Theo Sliman said. "We let a good opportunity get away from us. We are not the best team in the country, but we can be the best team in the last six holes. We didn't display that in any of our rounds this week. One shot per person is the difference between finishing 12th and finishing fourth. We are going to have to continue to apply and learn as we have one final opportunity headed into the conference tournament."
Louisiana finished the tournament with an overall score of 14-over par (878) to finish in a tie with No. 37 Memphis.
Mississippi State fended off Cincinnati to win the tournament firing a score of 7-under (281) in the final round to finish with an overall score of 5-under (859). The Bearcats carded the lowest team round of the tournament at 8-under (280) in the final round to finish one stroke back of the Bulldogs in second place with a 54-hole score of 4-under (860).
Ole Miss (-2, 862), Florida (+2, 822), South Alabama (+3, 823), Chattanooga (+3, 823) and Austin Peay (+3, 823) round out the top 5 teams.
The Bulldogs' Barrett Edens shot a tournament record 65 (-7) in the final round to earn individual medalist honors along with Austin Peay's Marco Iten at 9-under (207). Iten also had a good final round carding a 66 (-6).
Haraldur Magnus recorded his fourth straight top 25 finish, placing in a tie for 13th at even par (216).
"It's really nice to see Haraldur back up a tournament win with a good individual performance," Sliman added. "He was able to stay strong mentally and not let the pressure get to him."
Sophomore Ross Davis also placed in the top 25 finishing in a tie for 22nd at 2-over (218) after posting a final round score of even par (72).
Fernando Cruz Valle dropped 11 spots in the final round to end the tournament in a tie for 41st with teammate Thomas Strandemo at 6-over (222). Christian Verrougstrate rounded out the scoring in 76th at 14-over (230).
Louisiana returns to action next Monday in the third of four straight tournaments as the squad heads to Madison, Miss for the Reunion Intercollegiate hosted by Ole Miss.
