Cajuns Cruise To Third Straight Win

LAFAYETTE, La. – Shawn Long led seven players in double figures and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns cruised to their fifth win in their last six games, 115-76, over Milligan College on Wednesday at the Cajundome.
Long, the reigning Sun Belt Conference and LSWA Player of the Week, posted 26 points and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes for his 39th double-double of his career and third in his last four games. But he was not alone as the Cajuns (6-4) got 15 points apiece from Devonta Walker and Brian Williams, 12 from Kasey Shepherd and 10 apiece from Jay Wright, Donovan Williams and Johnathan Stove.
In the process, the Cajuns surpassed the 100-point mark for the second straight game, the first time they have done so in consecutive games since the 199-93 season. They are averaging 108 points per game in their last three contests.
Additionally, UL continued its hot shooting from the outside, following up its school-record 16 threes against Centenary with 11 more on 25 attempts against the Buffaloes (10-5), who were led by 17 points each from Morgan McLeod, Mickey Woods and Mike Woods Jr.
Head coach Bob Marlin's squad out-rebounded the Buffs 49-30 on the night and picked up 10 steals, three from Donovan Williams who also set a new career high in scoring in his final game before leaving the team after midyear graduation.
The Cajuns hit nearly 64 percent from the field in the first half after the Buffaloes opened up the game on a 7-0 run. Shepherd put the Cajuns ahead for the first time at 22-21 with eight minutes on with a steal and layup to open up a 13-0 run.
Long pumped in 20 of his 26 points in the opening half, hitting eight of his 11 field-goal tries, along with a pair of threes. Milligan got 13 points from Mickey Woods in the half, and hit seven three-point buckets, but went to the line just twice and allowed five Cajun triples while UL canned 13 of its 17 tries at the line.
The Cajuns scored the final seven points of the half, including an alley-oop dunk from Shepherd to Walker for the final score, and tied its season-high for a half with 64 points.
Walker led the way in the second half, hitting all five of his shots for 10 of his 15 points. After the Buffs scored five of the first seven points of the half, the Cajuns reeled off nine straight before a triple from Woods, one of 10 Milligan threes in the game.
UL upped the lead to 30 with a 9-2 spurt, capped by six straight points from Walker, before turning to the reserves for the final 12 minutes of the game. Stove and Xavian Rimmer then got in on the action by scoring the net nine Cajun points, and UL went over the 100-point plateau on Williams' second three of the game with 5:25 to go.
Louisiana will gun for its fourth straight win on Saturday when it hits the road for the first time in two weeks when it faces Northwstern State at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
