NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns got 23 points and 19 rebounds from junior Devonta Walker, but could not hold off an enthusiastic Northwestern State squad on Saturday, falling 89-85 to the Demons at Prather Coliseum.

The loss was the first to the Demons (4-5) for Louisiana (6-5) since 1971, snapping an eight-game win streak in the series for the Cajuns.

Walker picked up his firsta double-double as a Cajun, adding five assists to his total, and was joined in double figures by four teammates; however, 18 turnovers hindered a late Louisiana push for the lead, negating a night that saw the Demons go just 6-for-24 from three-point range and 13-for-23 at the foul line.

Kasey Shepherd continued to show well offensively with an 18-point outing that included two of UL's four threes. Jay Wright added 12 points and three assists, and Xavian Rimmer and Brian Williams had 10 points apiece.

UL lost for the first time this year when out-rebounding an opponent, owning the edge on the glass 49-38, and pulling in 20 offensive boards. Walker led all players with his 19 rebounds, while Shawn Long pulled in 13 boards.

Jalan West and Marvin Frazier each put up double-doubles for the Demons, with West dishing out 10 assists to go with 19 points, and Frazier pulling in 11 rebounds with 15 points. But it was sophomore Zeek Woodley who paced the Demon scoring, pumping in a team-best 20 points for the game.

Walker had his double-double in the first 20 minutes of play with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the first half, but the Cajuns were not able to hold onto an early 10-point lead that was taken on the strength of an 11-0 run.

Shepherd provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, hitting a pair of threes, but two early fouls on Long kept him on the bench for all but five minutes of the opening period.

The Cajuns got four points from Williams and five from Shepherd in that early 11-0 run that put UL up 15-5, but Ta'Jon Welcome ended the run with a dunk and then tied things up at 20-20 with 8:28 to play as part of a 15-4 Demon outburst.

UL kept West out of the scoring column until the final six minutes of the half, when he exploded for 11 points, including consecutive layups to give the Demons the lead at 32-30 with 4:25 to go. The Demons led by as much as six in the half on two times, including with zeros on the clock after West canned a straightaway three at the buzzer to send NSU into the locker room with a 50-44 advantage.

The Cajuns hit 16 of 21 from the foul line in the second period, but turned the ball over 13 times in the period. Northwestern State built as much as a 10-point lead in the second half after scoring the period's first two buckets; however, Louisiana did not let the Demons put them away and trimmed the lead down to four on a layup from Wright eight minutes into the period.

UL pulled to within a point on two occasions before finally taking the lead, 71-70, on a jumper from Shepherd with 7:09 remaining in the game. But Ta'Jon Welcome answered with a three and one possession later Woodley gave the Demons the lead for good with a score of his own.

Wright gave the Cajuns some life with the team's only three of the half with 2:34 to go, cutting the lead down to 86-82, but that was the last field goal the Cajuns would manage the rest of the way. Free throws from Walker got UL as close as 88-85 with less than 16 seconds to play, but no closer as its rally in the final seconds fell short.

With non-conference play now wrapped up, the Cajuns will turn their attention to Sun Belt Conference action, opening up league play on Dec. 30 at UALR.
