LAFAYETTE, La. – Freshman forward Simone Fields recorded a team-high 17 points while sophomore guard Jaylyn Gordon added 12 points off the bench to help the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team defeat Spring Hill College 67-47 in an exhibition game Monday night at the Cajundome.
"I thought at times we played hard," said head coach Garry Brodhead. "We still have some work to do on the defensive and offensive side, but I was pleased with our effort."
Fields, who finished 8-of-9 from the floor, helped the Cajuns offense to 47 percent from the field. Robbie Brown also had a strong night for Louisiana, totaling eight points and a team-high eight boards. Cienna Rodriguez came off the bench to lead the Cajuns with five assists.
"Simone is playing really well," Brodhead said. "Last game she was 5-for-5, this game she was 8-for-9. We know she can score. We feel that she finishes very well."
It was a slow start for both teams in the opening minutes of the first half until a jumper by Brown followed by a three from Gordon gave Louisiana a 7-0 advantage at the first media timeout.
The Badgers kept it close through the first 10 minutes of the game as Amee Smith knocked down two free throws to pull Spring Hill within four at 12-8 with 10:07 to play in the half.
However, Louisiana reeled off an 11-0 run over the next two and a half minutes, capped off by a jumper from Gabby Alexander to give the Cajuns a 23-8 lead with 7:39 remaining in the first half.
Turnovers haunted the Badgers the entire first half as the Cajuns turned 22 Spring Hill miscues into 22 points, stretching their lead to as much as 24 in the first period before taking a 37-15 lead into the break.
The Badgers opened the second half with baskets from Jennifer Clark and Jewel Hill before Kia Wilridge ended the Spring Hill spurt with a layup to make it 39-19 with 17:32 to play.
Teams traded baskets through much of the second half before the Cajuns stretched their lead to as much as 26 after a three-point play from Gordon with just over seven minutes left in the contest.
Louisiana earned its largest lead of the night with 6:33 to play after a layup from Fields pushed the Cajuns advantage to 60-32. Spring Hill chipped away at its deficit in the final minutes for a final 67-47.
Louisiana controlled the paint for a majority of the game, scoring 42 points down low while holding the Badgers to just 12. The Cajuns also held a 30-9 edge in points off turnovers and finished with an 11-1 advantage in steals.
