HOUSTON, Texas –
The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team picked up three wins in in the first round of the USTA Futures Event, with all three advancing to the semifinals of the qualifying draw for the main event of the Texas Tamale Company Houston Cup.

Unfortunately, the Cajuns dropped each of their three second-round matchups, with two of the losses to two of the top-eight seeded players in the field.

Jake Wynan advanced out of the first round with a straight-set (6-0, 6-0) win over Nipun Kakkar of India before running into top-seeded Daniel Manlow of Great Britain in the second match of the weekend on Saturday. After dropping the first set 6-4, Wynan rebounded to take the second set 7-5 (6) and forced a third-set tiebreaker before the field's top-seeded player managed to advance with a 7-6 (1) win in the final set.

"Jake definitely had a good performance in taking the No. 1 seed and 1000 ATP player Daniel Manolow to the wire," head coach mark Jeffrey said. "He needs to finish off these types of matches adn I believe he has learned a valuable lesson this week that will help him do that in the future."

Vlad Kramarov, a freshman from Ukraine, pushed through the first round with a (6-1, 6-2) win over Colombia's Sergio Avella. One round later he squared off with Germany's Michael Feucht, who pulled out a (6-3, 6-1) win.

Meanwhile, Damian Farinola moved past Russia's Iznaur Akhmaev (6-0, 6-2) in the opening round to advance to face Germany's Lukas Finzelberg in Round 2. There, however, No. 8 seed Finzelberg managed to advance with a (6-2, 6-1) win.

"The guys came out with a good attitude on Saturday. It was a little windy too, so conditions were difficult," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "I was glad that Vlad (Kramarov) got off to a good start in his match, which set the tone for the rest of the way. Damian (Farinola) came out strong as well defeating his Russian opponent pretty convincingly in the second set"

The Ragin' Cajuns get little time off and will next head to the ITA Southern Regionals in Auburn, Ala., beginning Oct. 16.
