LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns run at a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance began Friday when the men's basketball team took the court for its first official practice of the 2014-15 season.
The Cajuns come into the season under the direction of fifth-year head coach Bob Marlin, who led the team to its most wins (23) since the turn of the century last season, including a thrilling run through the Sun Belt Conference Tournament that resulted in the program's first official berth in the NCAA Tournament since 2005.
Louisiana will have to deal with the loss of NBA lottery pick Elfrid Payton from last year's squad, in addition to other starters Bryant Mbamalu and Elridge Moore; however, the Cajuns return a pair of starters in big man Shawn Long and Xavian Rimmer.
Long was the top big man in the Sun Belt a year ago, averaging 18.6 points, 10.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore and is one of only three current players in the nation to have averaged a double-double each of the past two years. Meanwhile, Rimmer made a big impact in his first year with the club, ranking sixth in the Sun Belt in three-point shooting and even poured in two big scoring efforts in the SBC Tournament, helping the Cajuns to the tournament title.
The Cajuns will also welcome back other contributors from last year such as Steven Wronkoski (4.4 ppg, 32.1 3pt%), Hayward Register (2.6 ppg, 33.9 3pt%) and Kasey Shepherd (8.2 ppg, 54.2 3pt%, 93.9 FT%). A slew of transfers, including Brian Williams (Oklahoma State), Devonta Walker (Western Texas College) and Jay Wright (Casper College) along with freshmen such as Johnathan Stove, Bryce Washington and Scott Plaisance will be counted on to make immediate contributions in 2014-15.
The team will work at least four scheduled practices a week through October, leading up to the team's exhibition opener on Nov. 5 against Loyola-New Orleans at the Cajundome. The season officially opens up on Nov. 14 against Louisiana College before four consecutive tests away from home against Tulsa, Auburn, Milwaukee and Oral Roberts as part of the MGM Grand Main Event.
