THE STORYLINE:  Well rested after enjoying the first bye week of the season, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team returns to action this week when they open Sun Belt Conference play against league newcomer Texas State on Saturday, Oct. 5 beginning at 6:00 p.m. CDT at Cajun Field. . . the game will be televised throughout Louisiana by the Ragin' Cajuns Network with Jeff Palermo, Scott Brazda and Erin Cofiell providing the commentary. . . Louisiana enters the week with a 2-2 record after coming from behind in the fourth quarter to grab a 35-30 win at Akron on Sept. 21. . . Texas State is 3-1 after giving head coach Dennis Franchione his 200th career win with a 42-21 decision at home over Wyoming on Saturday. . . this will be the first meeting between Louisiana and Texas State. . . Terrance Broadway earned Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career when he accounted for 373 yards and all five touchdowns at Akron. . . Jamal Robinson was Broadway's favorite target, catching a career-high eight passes for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns. . . safety Rodney Gillis made his sixth career interception at Akron. . . the Cajuns are 11-1 at home in three seasons under Mark Hudspeth and carry a three-game home win streak into the week.

CAJUNS EXCEL AT CAJUN FIELD:  The season-opening 70-7 win over Nicholls State improved the Cajuns to 11-1 at home in three seasons under head coach Mark Hudspeth.  Included in that record were wins in Hudspeth's first eight games, the third-longest in facility history.  Louisiana carries a three-game win streak into the Texas State game.

SERIES vs. TEXAS STATE:  Saturday's game will be the first meeting between Louisiana and Texas State.

LOUISIANA & THE RAGIN' CAJUNS NETWORK:  Saturday's game will be the first of three games televised this season on the Ragin' Cajuns Network.  Formed in 2011 by the Louisiana athletic department, the RCN is broadcast to 17 parishes and almost 500,000 households throughout Louisiana with Cox4 serving as the flagship station.  Also on tap for the RCN this year will be the Nov. 2 home game against New Mexico State and the season-ending contest at South Alabama on Dec. 7.  The Cajuns have had good success on the RCN, going 6-0 in games televised since its inception.

DOING MORE WITH MORE:  After years of achieving athletic success with less resources than some of its competitors, the Cajuns will finally get the opportunity to do more with more when construction begins later this fall on the first tier of projects in the $115 million Athletic Facilities Master Plan.  All 16 sports will be impacted with the addition of the Athletic Performance Center, a 71,000 square foot facility that will more than double the current existing space for athletic training (10,000 square feet), equipment (6,000) and two complete weight rooms (12,000 & 6,800).  The facility will also include a new football locker room, an auditorium capable of seating 150 people and house the football coaching staff.

CAJUNS GET WIN #500:  The 70-7 win over Nicholls State on Sept. 14 was the 500th in the 113-year history of the Louisiana football program.  The Cajuns begin the week with a 501-523-34 record.

SIMEON THOMAS ELIGIBLE:  After sitting out the first three games while the NCAA clarified his eligibility, freshman cornerback Simeon Thomas was granted a waiver by the NCAA just prior to the Akron game that made him eligible.  Thomas did not see any action against the Zips but with two full weeks of practice since, he should make his Louisiana debut against Texas State.

HONORING GOSSENS:  Ragin' Cajuns Hall of Famer Steve Gossens (1957-60) will be recognized prior to the Texas State game for his 50+ years of support to Louisiana athletics.  A four-sport standout for the Cajuns, Gossens was the driving force behind the creation of the large Louisiana flag that is used in the Pride of Acadina's show before every home game.  The flag, which is 53 feet by 80 feet, made its debut in 2001.

SURGENT EYES KICKOFF RECORDS:  Senior Darryl Surgent enters the week ranking second in school history in both career kickoff returns (112) and kickoff return yards (2,471).  He needs three more returns and 172 yards to break Joe Redding's school records of 114 returns and 2,642 yards set from 1985-88.

BACK-TO-BACK FIRSTS:  After playing Akron for the first time two weeks ago, the Cajuns will face Texas State for the first time on Saturday.  It will be the first time since playing Arizona and San Deigo State to end the 2011 season that Louisiana will face first time opponents in back-to-back games.  The Cajuns will meet a third new opponent on Nov. 16 when they travel to SBC newcomer Georgia State.

ROBINSON NEARS 1,000 YARD MARK:  A career-high eight catches totalling 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns at Akron on Sept. 21 moved junior receiver Jamal Robinson within 61 yards of becoming the 20th player in school history to catch passes for 1,000 yards or more in a career.  Robinson enters the week with 48 career catches for 939 yards and seven touchdowns.

. . . AND AKRON IS A CAREER PERFORMANCE:  The eight catches by Jamal Robinson at Akron broke his previous career high of six grabs set vs. East Carolina in the New Orleans Bowl last year.  In addition, the two touchdown grabs was the second multiple-touchdown game in his career (at ULM in 2012) and the 124 yards was his fourth career game of 100 yards or more.

GILLIS MAKES ANOTHER PICK:  Sixth-year senior defensive back Rodney Gillis celebrated his return to the starting lineup at Akron on Sept. 21 by intercepting a Kyle Pohl pass in the first quarter and returning it 28 yards to set up Louisiana's first touchdown in the 35-30 win.  The interception was the sixth by Gillis, the most by an active Cajuns player.  Gillis was second in the Sun Belt in 2012 with five interceptions.

STOVER TAKES OVER:  Kicker Hunter Stover learned a lot about kicking from Brett Baer the last two years and he displayed some of what he learned in the win at Akron.  After the Cajuns battled back to take the lead for good on a Terrance Broadway eight-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, Stover successfully attempted his first career on-side kick, recovering it himself to give the ball back to Louisiana.  Five plays later, Broadway connected with Darryl Surgent on a 14-yard pass that gave the Cajuns a 35-24 lead with 6:19 to play.   Stover has a long way to go to catch Baer, who was successful on eight of his 11 career onside kick attempts.

BROADWAY TIES RECORD WITH FIFTH 300-YARD GAME:  Terrance Broadway threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns at Akron to tie the school record with his fifth career 300-yard passing game.  The effort, the 31st 300-yard game in school history, allowed the Baton Rouge native to equal the mark held by both Jake Delhomme (1993-96) and Blaine Gautier (2009-12).  Broadway is just the 11th Cajuns player to throw for 300 yards in a game.

COMEBACKS COMPLETE FOR CARTER & SAVOIE:  The Nicholls State game on Sept. 14 featured performances by Cajuns sophomores Montrel Carter and Adam Savoie, both of whom missed the 2012 season because of injury.  Carter was the most visible of the two, starting at running back in the 2012 opener vs. Lamar and rushing six times for 27 yards before suffering a torn ACL.  Against Nicholls State, he gained 64 yards on eight carries, including a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.  Savoie, the son of University president Dr. Joseph Savoie, redshirted in 2011 as a wide receiver and then suffered a shoulder injury during spring practice that kept him out of the entire 2012 season.  On Saturday, Savoie played for the first time since the injury, catching a five-yard pass from D'Shaie Landor early in the fourth quarter.

McGUIRE SHINES IN CAJUN FIELD DEBUT:  Freshman running back Elijah McGuire wowed the Cajun Field crowd against Nicholls State, becoming the 11th true-freshman in school history to rush for 100 yards in a game.  He carried nine times for 137 yards and three touchdowns, including a scintillating 42-yard scamper on which he dragged Nicholls defensive back Treavon Evans for almost 10 yards and then had to fight off another defender to get into the endzone.  In four games, McGuire has carried 25 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns and a team-best 7.6 yards per carry.

. . . AND SCOTT SHINES IN FIRST HOME ACTION:  Freshman wide receiver Devin Scott also excelled in his Cajun Field debut.  The Harvey, La. native caught a 37-yard pass from Terrance Broadway to set up a Torrey Pierce touchdown run and added an 11-yard run on a flanker sweep to set up a Jamal Robinson touchdown catch in the third quarter.

BRAUCHLE SETS TWO KICKING RECORDS:  Sophomore kicker Stephen Brauchle broke one school record and equaled another by going 10-for-10 in extra point kicks against Nicholls State (Sept. 14).  Brauchle, who leads the Sun Belt by making all 20 of his extra point attempts this year, broke the old school record of eight extra points shared by Drew Edmiston (at North Texas, 2008) and Mike Shafer (vs. UAB, 1995) and tied Al Hatteberg's record of 10 attempts set vs. Troy in 1946.

RUSHING TO TOUCHDOWNS:  The 456 yards rushing by the Cajuns against Nicholls State on Sept. 14 was the third-highest single game total in school history.  It trailed the record 556 yards at ULM in 2008 and the 513 yards against Tulane in 1986.  Prior to 1986, the highest single game rushing total by the Cajuns was 350 yards against Donae in 1970.  The 10 touchdowns in the game broke the modern school record of eight vs. UAB (1995) and tied the all games record of 10 vs. Troy in 1946.

HARRIS CLOSES IN ON 2,000 YARD MARK:  A 46-yard rushing effort at Akron has raised Alonzo Harris' career rushing total to 1,832 yards, moving him into seventh place on the Louisiana career rushing list.  He enters the week ranked fifth in school history in rushing touchdowns (20) and 10th in attempts (372).  His 65.6 yards rushing per game is third best, trailing only Tyrell Fenroy (101.0 from 2005-08) and Brian Mitchell (77.6 from 1986-89).  Harris gained 700 yards as a freshman in 2011 and totalled 881 yards last season.

. . . AND THAT WAS SOME RUN FOR HARRIS:  Alonzo Harris entered the Nicholls State game ranked 11th in school history with 1,711 yards rushing.  On the third play of the game, he took a handoff from Terrance Broadway at his own 35 and by the time he got to the endzone, Harris had moved all the way up to eighth on the rushing chart.  He passed Marcus Prier (1,714 yards from 1993-95), Thomas Jackson (1,738, 1983-85) and Jim Barton (1,771, 1967-69) on the run.  One series later, he carried once for 10 yards to complete his night, passing Steve Mocek (1,781, 1991-94) and into seventh on the rushing list.

CAJUN FIELD SCORING RECORD FALLS:  The 70-point explosion against Nicholls State on Sept. 14 shattered the Cajun Field record of 56 points set by the Cajuns in a 56-21 win over UAB on Sept. 9, 1995.

. . . AND SO DOES THE CONSECUTIVE HOME GAME MARK:  When you add the 70 points scored against Nicholls State to the 52 points put on the scoreboard in the 2012 home finale vs. South Alabama, the Cajuns broke the Cajun Field record for consecutive home games with 122.  The previous best came in 1995 when Louisiana scored 99 points in back-to-back games against UAB (56) and New Mexico State (43).  The 122 points fell just shy of the program record of 128 set when the Cajuns shutout Lake Charles (75-0) in the 1943 season finale and came back to knock off LaGarde GH (53-0) to open the 1944 season.

. . . AND MORE SCORING:  The 10 touchdowns against Nicholls State tied the school record, originally set against Troy in 1946.  The 70 points was the most by Louisiana since a 75-0 win over Lake Charles AAF on Nov. 3, 1943 and the 63-point margin of victory was the highest since topping Troy, 64-0 on Nov. 8, 1946.
