LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team saw its comeback bid cut short as Louisiana fell to fourth seeded South Alabama 4-2 in the Sun Belt Championship quarterfinals on Friday at Cajun Courts.

“I want to thank the girls for a great season,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “We reached some great milestones this year including a winning record at home and 14-plus wins. I want to thank the administration and community for their support all season. Today was a tough match, but we fought from beginning to end. I give a lot of credit to South Alabama. They were able to hold us off at the end.”

The Jaguars (16-9) opened the match up with a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. The duo of Mariya Krachok and Ramona Ghermani clinched the point on court two with a 8-4 win.

In singles competition, South Alabama increased its advantage to 2-0 with a win on court three.

Freshman Nicole Breaux pulled the Cajuns (14-12) within a point defeating Krachok in straight sets at the No.2 position, 6-0, 6-4. Breaux finished the season with a 12-10 record in her freshman campaign.

After Paula Sanchez notched a point for the Jaguars on court six, Sophie van den Aarssen picked up the second point of the match for Louisiana topping Michaela Meszarosova 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 at No.1 to earn her 11th victory of the season.

“I was impressed with the efforts of Nicole and Sophie today,” Harkins mentioned. “Neither of them were going to be denied today and they came out and played a great match.”

USA closed out the match on court four as Bailey VanDyke couldn't overcome a first set tiebreak loss to fall 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 to Mary Angela Martin.

“We learned a lot this season that will carry over to next year,” Harked noted. “I really like the direction this team is headed. We still have some work to do, but we are getting there.”
