LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team swept a doubleheader against in-state rivals New Orleans and McNeese State at Cajun Courts to increase its win streak to six straight on Friday.
Louisiana (7-4) grabbed a 5-2 win over UNO (1-7) in the morning match before pulling out a hard fought 4-2 match against the Cowgirls (7-4) in the afternoon.
“This was really tough day with a doubleheader for the second straight weekend,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “We played two good in-state teams today. I'm proud of the how the girls have learned from the losses early in the season as they have been pushing through and getting satisfaction during this win streak. I give a lot of credit to the girls for battling. McNeese State came in on a roll and gave us everything they had in the second match.”
The Cajuns picked up the doubles point against the Privateers with wins at the No.1 and 2 positions. Juliette Clement and Melissa Burckharrt combined to clinch the match on court two with a 9-7 victory.
In singles play, the Cajuns quickly clinched the match winning on courts 1,4 and 6. Hannah Appleyard clinched the match for Louisiana defeating Victoria Svensson 6-4, 6-1 at the No.6 position.
The afternoon match saw the Cajuns win the doubles point again as Sophie van den Aarssen and Sandra Ahlqvist won their second doubles match of the day.
After McNeese State evened the match at 1-all, Louisiana jumped out to a 3-1 edge with wins at No. 2 and 4 singles.
Burckharrt closed out the match with her sixth straight win in singles defeating Annabelle Peacock 6-4, 6-2 at the No.6 position.
“I'm really proud of our girls for being able to overcome a shakeup in the lineup due to an injury that Juliette suffered in the early match,” Harkins stated. “Senior Hannah Appleyard really stepped up and was a role player for us. Melissa Burckhartt also had a good day clinching the win for us against the Cowgirls.”
The Cajuns close out a six-match homestand on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cajun Courts against another in-state rival in Northwestern State.
“We know Sunday is going to be an absolute war,” Harkins added. “Coach Dubios has his team ready and they will certainly give us their best. Anytime we play a team in state there is a little more on the line. Hopefully we can continue to see the great crowd support that has helped us on this win streak.”
