Cajun Women’s Tennis Defeats Alcorn State and Xavier (La.)

LAFAYETTE, La. – Coming off of a 4-3 win at Stephen F. Austin, the Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team extended its win streak to three matches after taking down Alcorn State 7-0 and Xavier (La.) 6-1 in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Cajun Courts.

“I was very pleased with the way the girls competed today,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “It was a complete team effort. The girls really battled throughout the lineup. We are starting to click on all cylinders, and we are getting better every time we step on the court.”

The Cajuns (4-4) dropped just one singles match out of 12 and came up short in only one of six doubles matches.

Against Alcorn State, Sophie van den Aarssen and Sandra Ahlqvist clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No.2 doubles.

Alhqvist clinched the match for UL with her 6-1, 6-1 win on court four against Merlin Tipp.

In the Xavier (La.) match, the Cajuns again won the doubles point despite a loss at No.1 doubles.

On court three, Ahlqvist notched her fourth straight victory downing Lafayette, La. native Brion Flowers 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.

Louisiana clinched the match at No.4 singles as Melissa Burckhartt defeated Simone-Alyse Ewell 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Eleanor Bradshaw notched her first collegiate win on court six topping Vashni Balleste 6-1, 6-3.

The Cajuns continue their six-match homestand tomorrow as they host Southern in 2 p.m. match at Cajun Courts. Admission to the match is free.

“We need to come back out tomorrow with the same intensity and enthusiasm,” Harkins noted.
