MOBILE, Ala. – Jessica Lewis and Mechell Daniel combined for 32 kills and South Alabama held off a late rally to defeat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 25-21, 25-22, 25-27, 26-24, in a Sun Belt Conference volleyball match on Sunday at Jag Gym.

Mallory Moore added 11 kills while Abby Baker recorded 20 a team-high digs as South Alabama (9-12, 4-7 Sun Belt) hit .248 for the match, including a .414 mark in the opening set.

Lewis, who hit .262 for the match, led the Jags with 17 kills while Daniel posted a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. Emily Hundt directed the South Alabama offense with 28 assists while Kiki von Piekartz added 17.

South Alabama took a 17-11 lead in the opening set on a service ace by Kelley Little before the Ragin' Cajuns chipped away at the lead. The Ragin' Cajuns closed to within 18-16 on a kill by Kaylee Nemeth, but a service error by Louisiana – one of six in the opening set and 12 in the match – along with a kill by Daniel pushed the South Alabama lead to 20-16 and allowed the Jaguars to eventually close out the set.

In the second set, the teams battled through nine ties and three lead changes with the last coming on a Ragin' Cajun service error that snapped a 19-19 deadlock that was followed by a kill by Daniel for a 21-19 lead.

South Alabama nearly closed out the match in straight sets, taking a 24-23 lead on a kill by Daniel. But on the ensuing serve, Nemeth and Tonice White combined on a block of Daniel at the net, before Lavinia Tataran thwarted a second match point for the Ragin' Cajuns with a kill that was followed by an attack error by Lewis and a set-clinching kill by Andrea Hole.

In the fourth set, Lewis, Moore and Symone Stephenson had four kills each as South Alabama hit .238 and held the Ragin' Cajuns to a .184 average. The Jaguars led 15-9 before the Ragin' Cajuns chipped away at the lead, tying the contest at 23-23 on an error by Stephenson.

Both teams traded points until Lewis rebounded from a blocked attempt, that tied the match at 24-24, with a pair of kills to give the Jaguars the victory.

Louisiana (15-10, 5-6 Sun Belt) was led by Sara Mossakowski with 17 kills while adding 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Tataran posted her eighth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs while White added 11 kills and five blocks.

Hole recorded her 15th double-double of the season for the Ragin' Cajuns with a match-high 47 assists along with 14 digs. Caitlyn Auxilien led all players with 23 digs.

Louisiana will return to action on Friday when it entertains Troy in a 7 p.m. contest at Earl K. Long Gym.
