COLUMBUS, Ohio – After jumping out to a 2-0 advantage, the 71st ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team fell in a hard fought match to No.64 Miami (Fla.) 4-3 in the first round of the ITA Kick-off  Weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.

“Obviously this is a disappointing loss,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “It came down to the other team's perseverance in a match that was right there for us to take. We have to work hard to change that. There are never any excuses, and this match was lost mentally today.

“I give a lot of credit to Miami. They fought hard. We need to learn from today and picture what we need to do tomorrow to come away with a win.”

The Cajuns captured the doubles point after wins at No.1 and No.2 doubles. Rick de Groot and Jake Wynan paired up to notch an 8-5 victory over Wilfredo Gonzales and Marco Stancati at No.1 doubles, while Jarred Wynan and Edgar Lopez tallied an 8-3 win over the team of Omar Aly and William Albanese at No.2 doubles.

In singles action, Lopez was the first to finish as his 6-4, 6-3 win against Victor Mauz at No.4 singles gave Louisiana a 2-0 edge.

Miami then rattled off four straight points at No.1,2,3 and 6 singles to take the match. The Ragin' Cajuns were able to force third set on three of the four courts, but could not come away with the needed fourth point.

Freshman Hunter Goertz picked up the final point for UL on court five battling back in the second and third sets to defeat Stancati, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 (7-3).

The men's team will get back into action early tomorrow as the Cajuns face No.72 ETSU at 9 a.m. CT in the consolation match of the Columbus Regional. Live video and stats are available for the match by clicking the links above.
