HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team is only three strokes back of first place after posting a 36-hole score of even par (568) on the first day of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
“I'm very pleased and excited from what I saw most of the day today”, head coach Theo Sliman said. “We had a lot of good things going on, but I am a little disappointed in the way we finished off the afternoon round. With that said, I think we are going to have six hungry guys come out tomorrow looking to make a move. We need to stay aggressive and hopefully good things will happen.”
Ole Miss leads the Sam Hall Intercollegiate after day one with a two-round score of three-under par (565). Louisiana Tech (570), Mississippi State (570) and Southeastern La. (571) round out the top five teams.
Seniors Brandt Garon and Yohann Vora lead the Cajuns as the pair are tied for 5th after carding a score of three-under par (139) on the day.
Garon shot the lowest round of the first day for UL with a 68 (-3) in the morning round, while Vora also had a sub-70 round posting a 69 (-2) in the afternoon.
“I really see some maturity in both Yohann and Brandt,” Sliman stated. “They both came out and played great to lead this team. I've also seen Ethan Savoy step up and show some leadership as well. That will go a long way for us throughout the season.”
Newcomer Ross Davis had a solid first day for the Ragin' Cajuns as he sits in a tie for 31st at three-over par (145).
Peter Lamaris rounded out the scoring for Louisiana after totaling a 36-hole score of five-over par (147). Savoy is currently one stroke back of Lamaris in a tie for 47th.
Louisiana Tech's Victor Lange sits atop the individual leaderboard at seven-under par (135).
The Cajuns tee off in the final group with Ole Miss and Mississippi State tomorrow morning starting at 9:30 a.m.
“Very excited to be in the final group in the first tournament of the season,” Sliman said. “We are putting ourselves in a good position to make something happen, and that's what I expect from this team each time out.”
