BATON ROUGE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team could not overcome a challenging University Club course on Sunday as Louisiana finished in sixth at the LSU National Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.

“We just weren't mentally tough today,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “It was definitely a demanding golf course, but we can't let that affect us. The courses at the conference tournament and nationals will be just as tough. We do have positives to take away from this weekend. We just couldn't put together a solid performance the entire tournament. We are a much stronger team than what we showed this weekend.”

The Cajuns moved into third place early in the third round at -3 but ended the day with final round score of 299 (+11). On the weekend, UL posted a three-round total of 26-over par (890).

No.24 LSU captured the team title carding a total score of nine-under par (853). No.34 Iowa (855), Purdue (877), Iowa State (882) and Louisiana Tech (887) round out the top 5 at the LSU National Invitational.

“There were some good rounds to be had out there and it showed with the scores of the other teams,” Sliman said. “I know we are a very solid program. It's time the guys on the team start believing it as well. Our problem is not physical. We need to get stronger mentally if we want to have success.”

Andrew Noto registered a weekend-best 54-hole score for the Cajuns finishing in tie for 14th overall at four-over par (220). Brandt Garon also finished in the top 25 in a tie for 21st at seven-over par (223).

Chris Weninger posted a final round score of 75 to place in a tie for 29th at nine-over par (225), while senior Philipp Fendt struggled after a hot start finishing in a tie for 39th at 11-over par (227).

Austin Gutgsell won the individual championship after shooting a 65 in the final round to finish with a score of nine-under par (207).

Louisiana returns to action on Monday, April 9 when the Cajuns head to the All-American Classic in The Woodlands, Texas.
