2/20/2012 7:33:00 PM | Men's Tennis
The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No.40 Virginia Commonwealth inside the Thalhimer Tennis Center on Monday afternoon.
“We played a legitimate Top 40 team today, and we are only going to get better from this experience,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “We played with a lot of energy in doubles at the No.1 and No.2 positions. We also played well at the top of our lineup in singles, but VCU's depth showed in singles play and was the difference in the match.”
The Cajuns grabbed the doubles point after wins at both No.1 and No.2 doubles. Rick DeGroot and Carlin Murray bested VCU's Alexis Heugas and Antoine Baroz 9-7, while Brandon Farine and Yanick Mandl grabbed an 8-3 at No. 2 doubles over Filip Svensson and Max Wennakoski.
The Rams took over the match in singles play winning at positions but No.2 singles. Murray picked up the lone point for the Cajuns in singles play defeating Svensson 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
Mandl and Carl Alberton both had good showings in singles play as they forced a third set in their matches. UL is back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
