BATON ROUGE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team looks to rebound this weekend in the squads third tournament of the year as UL heads to the David Toms Intercollegiate hosted by LSU at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
“This is going to be a big test for us,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “LSU is hosting a regional here this spring, so they are going to have the course playing at its maximum yardage this weekend. Pars are going to be premium, which will make things tough.
“Its nice to be competing in state with a couple guys on the team from the area. This is going to be a big chance for us to make a statement.”
Play begins with a shotgun start for the first round on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The second round follows immediately after the conclusion of the first round on Saturday, while the final round is slated to start at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The David Toms Intercollegiate field includes host No.16 LSU, No.50 Lamar, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Alabama, No.41 Tulsa, Louisiana and UAB.
The Cajuns are paired with Mississippi State and Lamar on the opening day. Freshman Christian Verrougstraete will make his UL debut this weekend, while Kelsey Angelle will make his first appearance of the 2012 season.
“I'm anxious to see Christian's debut as a freshman in the starting lineup,” Sliman stated. “Christian has got the total package when it comes to the game. The challenge for him is to get comfortable being so far away from home. Kelsey has been playing well lately. He seems to thrive in this state, and I expect good things from him.”
Brandt Garon, Yohann Vora and Peter Lamris round out the starters for the Cajuns at the David Toms Intercollegiate. Freshmen Ross Davis and Thomas Strandemo will also make the trip and compete as individuals for Louisiana.
