MANSFIELD, Texas – Coming off of a dominant performance at Lamar's Cardinal Classic, the Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team wrapped up action at the Mansfield USTA Futures event on Sunday.

“For our guys to play top 700 players in the world and come away knowing what they need to do to get to a higher level, helps our program tremendously,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “Top 25 teams are sending players to events like this one. For us to reach their level, we have to do the same. These kind of events help our players to be successful once they leave our program and gain world rankings.”

Jake and Jarred Wynan and Damian Farinola each advanced to the second round of qualifying at the Mansfield Futures. Jake defeated Jack Barber 6-1, 6-4 in the first round to advance, while his brother Jarred had a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Carlos Arbiza Torrens of Venezula to advance. Farinola also won in straight sets downing Naoki Nakagawa of Japan, 7-5, 6-3.

Edgar Lopez was the only Cajun to fall in the first round suffering a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Charles Boyce.

“The first day was good with three of four guys winning,” Jeffrey stated. “On the second day I was looking for someone to break through, unfortunately we weren't able do that.

“Even though we didn't have someone break though, we still had a good showing and picked up some invaluable experience.”

On day two, all three UL players in the event came up short ending the Cajuns presence at the Mansfield Futures Event.

Jake Wynan battled No.688 Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan to a 6-1, 6-4 defeat in the second round. Jarred Wynan also fell on day two with a 6-0, 6-4 result against No.1098 Mohammed Abid of Tunisia, while Farinola fell to No.726 Ryan Rowe, 6-4, 6-2.

The Cajuns return to action this weekend when they head to Birmingham, Ala. for a USTA Futures Events. Action is set to get underway Saturday morning. Receive live updates from the Birmingham Futures by following the team on twitter @CajunMensTennis.

“We play futures events the next two weeks and our goal is to see someone break through to the main draw” Jeffrey added. “One of the points of playing these types of events is to earn ATP points. To do so, our players have to get into the main draw. Our players are certainly capable of doing just that.”
