Track Continues Indoor Season Saturday at Blue Raider Invite
1/20/2012 9:58:00 PM | Track and Field
The Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field teams are set to take in their second meet of the 2012 season on Saturday as they participate in the Blue Raider Invitational at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
The meet gets underway at 11 a.m. with the men's and women's shot put and the day's action wraps up with the one mile relays at 4:40 p.m. The complete meet schedule can be found here.
Head coach Lon Badeaux enters the Blue Raider Invitational with a full compliment of athletes on both the men's and women's side. The Cajuns opened the indoor season last weekend at the McNeese Cowboy Indoor, but many of the veterans did not compete as Badeaux used the event to allow several new athletes a chance to get acclimated to the collegiate environment. A total of 19 freshmen competed at McNeese.
Louisiana will be joined in competition at the Murphy Center by the men's and women's teams from Belmont, Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee, Milligan and Western Kentucky, while Troy will be represented by their women's squad.
For Badeaux and his troops it's a chance to preview what's in store for the upcoming Sun Belt championships which will be held at the Murphy Center Feb. 25-26.
“We look forward to seeing where we stack up against Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee who are the traditional powers in the Sun Belt Conference,” Badeaux said. “We had a good start with some younger athletes last week and we are excited to have our complete team compete this week with the addition of our returning athletes.”
Stacey Imagbe and Joshua Sigler were the top rookies for the Cajuns at McNeese. Imagbe claimed the women's long jump with a leap of 5.73m/18-9 ¾. Sigler took top honors in the men's long jump with a distance of 7.36m/24-1 ¾.
Sigler currently tops the Sun Belt Conference's long jump performance list while Imagbe is listed in the league's Top 5 for women's long jump.
Chris Roy, who sat out the 2011 season, made a triumphant return in the men's pole vault capturing the McNeese event with a height of 4.95m/16-2 ¾. Roy was the SBC's indoor pole vault champion in 2009 and 2010 and placed seventh in the 2010 NCAA Indoor championships.
Tarvia Conway is coming off her personal best leap in the women's triple jump, claiming the event title at McNeese with a mark of 11.84m/38-10 ¼.
Key returners expected to see their first action of 2012 include Albert Fournette and Garrett Harkless on the men's side and Jasmine Manuel on the women's side.
Fournette is coming off an outstanding outdoor season in which he advanced to the NCAA Championships on the strength of a school-record and state-leading distance of 59-3 ½ (18.07m) in the shot put. Harkless is the Sun Belt's reigning indoor champion in the weight throw with a toss of toss of 18.36m/60-3 in the 2011 event.
Manuel, a reigning SBC indoor champion as well, turned in a school record triple jump leap of 12.77m/41-10 ¾ during last season's SBC indoor championships. Manuel nearly matched that mark in the outdoor championships, claiming that title with a leap of 12.76m/41-10 ½.
Live statistics of Saturday's meet can be followed here. A complete wrapup will be available on RaginCajuns.com Sunday afternoon.
