The 19th ranked Ragin' Cajuns rallied late, but fell to the sixth ranked Arizona State Sun Devils in their only contest of the day by a score of 10-4. With the loss, the Cajuns fell to 1-2 thus far at the 2011 Judi Garman Classic, with both losses coming to ranked Pacific-10 Conference teams.
Three of the Cajuns (22-5) five losses have come to ranked Pac-10 teams.
Ashley Brignac (10-2) got the start for the Cajuns and was shouldered with the loss, but only pitched one inning, giving up three runs on three hits. Allie Chenault threw the remainder of the game and kept the Cajuns in it, giving up seven runs, four earned, on eight hits.
UL posted six hits in the contest with Nerissa Myers recording two hits
The Sun Devils (29-2) scored three runs in the first inning, thanks to three doubles with a walk sandwiched in the middle.
Chenault came on in relief of Brignac to start the second inning, and after retiring the first batter she faced, the Sun Devils hit four straight singles, with only one being hit hard, to plate their fourth run and take a 4-0 lead.
A bases loaded walk followed by a fielder's choice scored two more runs for ASU who took a 6-0 lead.
The Cajuns threatened in the fourth inning with Nerissa Myers leading off with a single. She would advance to third base with two outs, but a Paige Cormier deep fly ball to center field was caught by Arizona State's Lesley Rogers on a sprint towards the fence to end the inning.
ASU extended its lead to 7-0 with a lead-off home run in the fourth inning.
The Cajuns would put four runs on the board in the sixth inning. Katie Smith led off with a walk and moved to second base on a single by Myers. Smith would score and Myers would advance to third on an RBI single up the middle by Bridges. Myers would then score on a wild pitch to make the score 7-2.
Christi Orgeron then lifted a home run over the left field fence to plate herself and pinch runner Natalie Fernandez to bring the score to 7-4. The homer was Orgeron's 12th of the season and extended her streak of consecutive games reaching base to 27 games.
The Sun Devils would add their final three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all of them unearned.
Dallas Escobedo (13-1) went the distance for ASU and got the win.
The Cajuns will close out the Judi Garman Classic on Saturday night when they take on New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. CT and Long Beach State at 9:30 p.m. CT. Live stats will not be available for Saturday night's games.
