During the recent NCAA early signing period, the Ragin' Cajuns baseball team added five players to its 2012-13 recruiting class.
UL received National Letters of Intent from high school standouts Blake Trahan, Nick Thurman, and Lance Quebodeaux. Louisiana also added two junior college signees, Ryan Wilson and Ashton Goudeau.
“This year's class was not going to be a very large class with only seven seniors departing in 2012,” head coach Tony Robichaux said. “In last year's class we signed eight freshmen and six junior college transfers. Coach Trahan and Coach Babineaux have done a great job in recruiting a very athletic class with players that have the ability to develop quickly.”
Blake Trahan is a shortstop out of Kinder High School in Kinder, La. Trahan has started every game for Kinder and helped lead the Yellow Jackets to their 12th straight District Championship.
Trahan is a three-time first team All-District player. He has also won the awards of two-time District MVP and first team Class 2A All-State.
The shortstop's junior year stats consisted of a .562 batting average, 11 homeruns, 49 runs batted in, 14 doubles, and 25 stolen bases.
The next Cajuns signee, Nick Thurman, comes out of Belle Chasse High School located in Belle Chasse, La. Thurman is a catcher with a very strong throwing arm, throwing out 73 percent of attempted base stealers last season.
Thurman led Belle Chasse to the State Championship game in 2010, and a 23-6 record to go along with a District Championship in 2011. He received the 2011 awards of First Team All-State, First Team All-Metro, First Team All-District, and Team Hustle Award Winner.
His 2011 statistics include a batting average of .476, three homeruns, 38 runs batted in, and 16 stolen bases.
The final high school signee, Lance Quebodeaux, is a 6'5” left handed pitcher out of Sam Houston High School in Lake Charles, La. Quebodeaux led the Broncos to a District 4-4A Championship while also earning the honors of 5-4A All-District honorable mention in 2011.
The southpaw pitcher saw his velocity increase by a few miles per hour last year, and his final 2011 stats are proof of it. Quebodeaux posted a record of 5-0, with an earned run average of 1.29, while striking out 43 batters in the process.
Ryan Wilson comes to the Cajuns out of Seminole State College, a junior college program in Seminole, Okla. At Seminole State, Wilson plays center field, and is a left handed pitcher.
Wilson's stats for the 2011 season as a pitcher included 37.2 innings pitched, 2.62 earned run average, and a 4-1 record. As a batter, Wilson hit .297, slugged eight homeruns, and drove in 34 runs.
In high school, he won the awards of All-Metro, Oklahoma All-State, and First Team All-American.
The final signee for the Cajuns is Ashton Goudeau, a 6'6” right handed pitcher out of Maplewood Junior College in Kansas City, Mo.
The big right handed hurler was awarded All-Conference First Team playing in the Four Rivers Conference in Missouri.
Goudeau posted a 4-3 record last year, with a 1.47 earned run average, in 49 innings of work. Goudeau also struck out an astonishing 50 batters while surrendering just 30 hits, and 17 walks.
