Cajuns Use Late Run to Get Past Southern

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team used a late 14-0 run to seal a victory against Southern University on Saturday at Earl K Long Gym, 60-49.

The Cajuns were led by Krystal Motley who scored 19 points and had five rebounds. Kemi Rotibi was huge again scoring 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds.

The Ragin Cajuns (3-4, 0-0) got off to a slow start hitting only one field goal in the first 13-plus minutes of the game before Megan Whittaker drained a three pointer to cut the Southern (1-3, 0-0) lead to 16-11.

The visitors gained their biggest advantage of the game on a lay-up by Kendra Coleman to extend the Lady Jaguars lead to 25-15.

UL closed the half on an 11-3 run and went into the locker rooms trailing just 28-26 despite shooting 24 percent from the floor. Motley had seven points and the Cajuns forced Southern into 14 turnovers in the first half. Coleman had eight points to lead SU.

The Lady Jaguars struggled to contain Rotibi down low as she made back-to-back lay-ups to give Louisiana their first lead of the second half 34-32.

Two free throws by Southern's Adrian Sanders cut the UL lead to 46-45. From there, the Ragin' Cajuns made their late game run to close out SU.

Josie West and Motley stepped up big during the 14-0 run as they combined to hit five jumpers to put the game out of reach.

The Cajuns ended the game shooting nearly 40 percent from the field after starting the game 1-for-16. UL had 28 points in the paint and 22 second chance points. They also forced Southern into 24 turnovers and had a season-low turnovers of 14.

Louisiana will take a week off for final exams before a rematch with Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, December 11 at Earl K. Long Gym.
