Cajuns Fall to MSU in Finale of Road Trip

Louisiana's women's basketball fell Monday night on the road to a hot shooting Mississippi State squad 72-38 at the Humphrey Coliseum.
 
UL (5-6, 0-0) shot a season-low 22 percent from the field and turned the ball over 27 times. Laurie' Beaty led the way for the Cajuns scoring in double figures for the second consecutive with 11 points and five rebounds. Mercedes Johnson had six points and five rebounds.
 
MSU (9-2, 0-0) had three players reach double figures in the game. Senior Ashley Brown led the way scoring all of her 15 points in the first half and garnered seven rebounds. Diamber Johnson had a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists, while Prosha Porter added 13 points and seven boards.
 
To start the game, the Lady Bulldogs used hot shooting and defensive pressure to force Ragin' Cajun's turnovers, as they went out to a 16-0 lead on a basket by Brown.
 
Freshman Megan Whittaker got the Cajuns on the board as she knocked down her ninth three pointer of the season making the score 16-3 at the 14:05 mark.
 
After a 7-0 run from Mississippi State, Nicole Morris hit Louisiana's second three of the game making the score 23-6 in favor of the home team.
 
MSU then scored nine of the next 11 points, extending their lead to 32-8 on a basket from Johnson with 6:38 to play in the half.
 
Brooklyn Arceneaux got on the scoreboard as she rebounded her own miss and layed it in. Senior Michelle Brunker made back-to-back jump shots completing a 6-0 Ragin' Cajuns scoring run cutting into the Lady Bulldogs lead, 37-16.
 
Mississippi State went into the locker rooms leading by the score of 39-16. The 16 points were the lowest first half point total UL has scored all season.
 
Brunker led the Cajuns in scoring in the first stanza with four points, while Morris and Whittaker each had three. The Cajuns shot 27 percent from the field and tied a season-high with 15 first half turnovers.
 
Brown led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Johnson had four points and six assists to complete her first half effort.
 
Louisiana's Johnson scored her second bucket of the second half off a putback from a Josie West miss. Mississippi State responded right back with a quick inbounds layup by Porter to give MSU a 49-20 advantage with 15:20 remaining in the game.
 
Consecutive baskets from Catina Bett increased the Lady Bulldog's lead to 54-23 at the 11:26 mark.
 
Olivia Nino made a three pointer from the top of the key and Beaty hit her third three of the second half and the Cajun's sixth three of the contest making the score 59-34 with 8:00 left.
 
MSU scored the game's 13 of the final 15 points as Louisiana dropped its second of three games on the road swing.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns return home on Thursday, December 22 to face its final non-conference opponent before conference play begins, Tulane at 7:00 p.m.
