Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team signed three players to National Letters of Intent in the early November signing period, head coach Mark Jeffrey announced Thursday.
“This is a great start to our recruiting class for 2013,” Jeffrey said. ”We look to sign two more players in late signing that are also among the elite players in the nation. These young men will turn some heads next year with the high end players we are signing.”
Joining the squad in 2012-13 will be Jake Wynan from Nimmitabel, Australia, Hunter Goertz from Austin, Texas and Coleman Wahlborg from Baton Rouge, La.
“This is one of the best signing classes in the country for a Mid-Major Program,” Jeffrey stated. “Signing a legitimate Blue Chip Recruit in Jake Wynan, a five-star and No. 2 ranked player from Texas in Hunter Goertz, and the second best junior in Louisiana in Coleman Wahlborg is going to really help our program moving forward. We are really excited about these guys and how they will develop here and become some of the best players in our conference”.
Wynan comes to UL from Karabar Distance Education in Australia. He has been ranked as high as No. 3 in Australia and is currently ranked 76th in the Australian Men's rankings. Wynan also has appeared in the ITF Junior rankings placing as high as 265 in the world.
The Australian native has won two Australian Championships in doubles play and was a runner-up at Sydney Junior ITF singles a year ago.
“Wynan is one of the top Juniors, if not the best Junior out of Australia this year,” Jeffrey said. “Jake has already beaten the No. 2 US Junior (Mac Styslinger) last year and is a bon-a-fide Blue Chip recruit.”
“Jake lives in remote part of Australia and has had to overcome great odds to be the player he is today,” Jeffrey affirmed. “He has been handed nothing, and has had to work for everything he has achieved which has taught him such valuable lessons in life. I believe Jake has incredible upside and in this environment he will quickly become one of the best players nationally here in the US”.
Goertz currently attends Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. He recently finished fifth at the Texas Open and placed third at the Texas Excellence Tournament. A Bob McKinley Texas Section Sportsman of the Year recipient, Goertz has had three finishes inside the Texas Top 25.
“I have been watching Hunter play for some time now, and what really hit me from the very beginning was Hunter's commitment and intensity when playing his matches,” Jeffrey said. “Every single time he gave everything he had. Hunter has a great mentality for tennis. That is what you have to have at the highest levels.”
“Hunter is one of the top 60 players in the nation and a five-star recruit,” Jeffrey added. “He was sought after by many SEC schools and highly ranked West Coast teams so we understand that we are getting a quality player for four years that will help us contend every year in the Sun Belt Conference. We look for Hunter to really continue to improve here at UL and give him a chance to compete on the ATP tour very soon.”
Wahlborg currently attends the University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, La. where he has guided the team to a State Championship four times. He has placed in the top 20 in South 16's and the top 30 in south 18's. Wahlborg has also posted a top 10 win at the Davis cup and finished third in Southern Level 2.
“When I first laid eyes on Coleman I saw size and movement which is not very common,” Jeffrey stated. “He has a big serve in which he can mold the rest of his game around. His results against top level competition are really impressive and he has the ability to compete with higher ranked players. Once he is in a setting with 12 players of equal ability I believe he will really flourish.”
“Coleman comes from a strong tennis background here in Louisiana,” Jeffrey said. “His father John has owned and operated one of the most successful tennis programs in Louisiana for some time now. Coming from a tennis family, Coleman understands what it takes to work hard and push to a higher level. I look for Coleman to really turn some heads and compete at a high level very early in his career. He has the tools, and I believe when he gets that depth of competition day in, day out he will truly thrive”.
