Pilots Top Cajuns in Season Opener, 63-50

The Ragin' Cajuns basketball team could not overcome a 23 turnover night as UL dropped the season opener to LSU-Shreveport, 63-50, Monday night at Earl K. Long Gym.
Mercedes Johnson led the Cajuns on the night with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Kemi Rotibi posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
LSUS also had two players tally double-digit efforts led by Jenna Diakos who had a double-double of her own with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
UL shot 30-percent from the field in the contest while going 11-for-17 from the charity stripe. The Lady Pilots took 21 free throws in the contest converting on 17.
In the first half, LSU-Shreveport knocked down five triples to take a 31-28 lead into the half. Johnson had a team-best eight points to lead Louisiana going into the break.
The Lady Pilots jumped out to an early 11-4 advantage after a couple buckets by Meoshi Bradley.
UL used a 9-3 run to cut the LSUS edge to one point at the 7:31 mark in the first half. Johnson accounted for six of the nine points in the run.
The Cajuns would go on to tie the contest three times before taking a 28-27 lead on two made free throws by Josie West with 2:27 left in the half.
A Jenna Diakos layup put the Lady Pilots back in front 29-28. LSU-Shreveport went on to add two more points after a couple Victoria Smith free throws to end the half.
After Rotibi pulled the Cajuns within one point at 31-30 to start the second half, the Lady Pilots went on an 8-0 run to take a 10-point advantage.
Kylie Leonards' free throw gave LSUS a 12-point lead at the 9:40 mark in the second half.
The Lady Pilots got out to their biggest lead of the game at 60-47 with 2:21 remaining in the contest.
Louisiana returns to action on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Nicholls State in a non-conference game at Earl K. Long Gym.
